No one can fault iJOY for slowing down a bit. In a seemingly endless stream of product previews and reviews over the last few months, the venerable vape pioneers have introduced a slew of new products and completely redefined their offerings. The latest, the single-cell iJoy Capo 100-watt mod (paired here with the Captain Mini sub-ohm tank) is another attempt by iJOY to convince the world that larger batteries will pave the path to vaping nirvana.
Maybe that’s an overstatement, but as iJOY has done for its recent 20700-format devices, a brand-new 21700 cell is included in the Capo Kit. This is likely to further the company’s claim that a single 21700 offers the same performance and battery life as a pair of 18650 cells.
To be honest, our experience with iJOY’s 20700 mods has been mixed, to say the least. As has our experience with the batteries themselves. However, the Capo has us intrigued, as we wonder if the performance difference of a 21700 would be noticeable in a single-battery setup, rather than the standard dual-cell arrangement.
To make the transition easier (and to placate non-converts), the Capo is also compatible with both 20700 and 18650 cells, using included adapter sleeves.
Power sources aside, the 78x52x30mm Capo has some interesting features, as well as some welcome carryovers from the company’s flagship Captain series of mods and tanks. While noticeably shorter and denser than its Captain brethren, the Capo maintains the same bright, well-laid out OLED display, powered by the IWEPAL chipset, and the wonderfully clicky, oversized fire button.
Because of its reduced height, iJOY made the Capo a touch wider than most mods in this category, which is a nice touch, as it allows atomizers up to 26mm in diameter to sit flush without overhang. Unfortunately, due to the placement of the battery opening, nothing larger than that can be used here.
Speaking of which, the battery slot is accessed from a top-mounted screw cap, similar to the Pico series of compact mods, the Vaporesso Swag, and the SMOK AL85, and seems to hold things snug, regardless of which format vapers opt to use.
Also included in the kit is the 22.5mm Captain Mini tank, which comes ready for both 2mL and 3.3mL configurations, and employs the same threadless coil system users have come to love or loathe, depending on previous experiences with the series. And yes, the trademark “groove” heat dissipating design also returns here, as well.
Like I’ve said countless times over the past few months, we’re pulling for iJOY to hit the mark. Though we’ve had some glorious highs and disappointing lows, if any company can change the tide for compact, but powerful box mods, it’s iJOY. We’ll report back with a comprehensive review in the next week. I’ve only just received mine and have been putting it through the paces. It won’t take long to see how well it holds up, or doesn’t hold up. Stay tuned…
