These days the vaping industry is generating billions of dollars annually. The tech behind modern vaping is quite robust and quickly evolving as new companies seem to pop up overnight. However, is vaping a current trend or is there some history of the activity.

“ELEMENT

Vaping as a concept can trace back to the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, and even the Hindi Culture. Similarly, China has a long history of vaping as well. They weren’t using modern methods, however. Some of the oldest records on vaping describe the process of “throwing herbs and seeds on hot stones and inhaling the vapor. The Babylonians were some of the first to vaporize cannabis.

The more ‘modern history’ of vaping can go back to the conception of the e-cigarette in 1927. Joseph Robinson had this idea way back in the early 20th century however it didn’t become a ‘reality’ until the beginning of the 1960s. In 1963, Herbert Gilbert created and patented the first functional electronic cigarette, and since then, the rise of the modern game of vaping was slow but steady.

Tobacco and Vaping

As mentioned, the first commercial vaporizers spawn from the people’s insatiable appetite for nicotine. Nicotine could be found in many different ways, whether through cigarettes, chewing tobacco, snuff, and even topical applications. In 1965, Gilbert patents the first e-cigarette.

During the 80s, Phil Ray and Normal Jacobson were attempting to create the e-cigarette market however they were shut-down by the FDA in the early 1990s. It was mostly in response to the adverse effects of tobacco that were revealing. As we know, in the 1950s and 60s, smoking was even endorsed by physicians, and thus the FDA wanted to limit the introduction of new products.

Little did they know that e-cigarettes were actually “safer” than smoking tobacco, because vaporizers eliminate combustion, meaning there is no smoke which damages the organism.

In the mid-90s, the first cannabis vaporizer invented in Amsterdam. The Volcano sparked a revolution that would spread like wildfire and create a multi-billion dollar industry over the next three decades.

The Modern Explosion of Vaping

It wasn’t until the early 2000’s that vaping started to become a “trend.” In the 90’s, people were still relying heavily on ‘smoking,’ however, with the turn of the century, this new method took roots. In the beginning, the prices of e-cigarettes were incredibly high. Some people spend hundreds of dollars to buy a device. Today, you can find disposable vaporizers for under $10. The more robust vaporizers will still set you back a few hundred dollars. However, the durability and the technology one acquires with such a purchase will last you for years.

The Cannabis industry also played a significant role in the popularization of vaporizers. Since many people used cannabis for medical purposes, the idea of vaping instead of smoking made more sense. Additionally, people found that vaping cannabis lasted them longer than smoking it and it had a more therapeutic effect overall.

As the rise in popularity of marijuana increased within the US population, currently with a 60% approval rate, the growth of the popularity of vaping also increased.

How Modern Vaporizers Work

There are a few elements that go into making your vaporizer work. At first, you have the battery. It is usually a lithium battery. The battery is the ‘electronic’ aspect of e-cigarettes. By heating up a coil, it turns liquid into vapor thus effectively ‘vaporizing’ your herbs or liquids.

Next, you have the Atomizer. The atomizer is attached to the battery. The atomizer has a coil that connects to the battery. By activating the atomizer, the coil heats up and evaporates the oils within the herbs or liquid within the chamber.  Modern atomizers, cartomizers all have their function within the world of vaping.

The cartridge is where you store the liquid you will be vaping. Dry herb vaporizers have a compartment where the herbs can place, usually with a screen protecting you from inhaling the dry herbs.

“AVAILABLE”

It is all connected to the inhaler. By directly inhaling through the mouthpiece, you get the ‘hit’ of the juice you are looking for it.

Where is Vaping going from here?

The Future of Vaping seems bright. Not only is it a safer alternative to smoking tobacco, but the industry has also evolved a lot over the past few years. Granted, it’s not “safe” in the general sense of the word. However, it is roughly 95% safer than traditional cigarettes. Additionally, with so many “no smoke indoors” laws, vaping allows people to continue using their drug of choice, whether cannabis or nicotine, without creating clouds of smoke for other people to inhale.

Of course, some limitations will still be in place, such as not vaping in an airplane. However, most bars and other social venues have no issues with people vaping, while they may have issues with people smoking.
