Voopoo has made quite a name for itself lately, and we’ve enjoyed reviewing several of the company’s products. Its latest – the Voopoo TOO 180W Box Mod multiple-battery box mod – continues their commitment to unique design choices. But, at first look, we have to question one of them: the battery options.

Unlike most mods with multiple-battery configurations, the Voopoo TOO doesn’t have a smaller form factor when using fewer cells. Instead, users simply have the option to use one or two batteries. In a standard 2-3 battery device, such as the Sigelei Fuchai Duo-3, or the venerable Wismec Reuleaux RX2/3, the user selected a battery setup as much for comfort as they did for power.

In the Voopoo TOO, this 180W Box Mod isn’t something vapers will need to concern themselves with, since nothing changes about the form factor, just the output. We’re curious to see how performance and battery life are affected by this decision.

Multiple-Battery Mod … Multiple Battery Doors

On the Voopoo TOO 180W Box Mod, the most immediate thing you’ll notice is the sliding doors on either side of the device, protecting either a single 18650 battery (80 watts of power), or dual-18650s (180 watts). But the doors themselves are the selling point, since they’re extremely diverse, and will have fans in line for any of the four initial designs.

Of course, the designs are – well – a little bolder than most vape mods out there, short of the Asvape Michael, or some of today’s gaudier LED lightshow devices. On the Voopoo TOO, users can choose between black or silver frames, and one of four print choices for the doors.

If the doors were just solid colors or more traditional patterns, we wouldn’t be giving this too much column space. But Voopoo has graced us with the following options: Dazzle, Raisin, Turquoise and Ditch Dark.

Our “Raisin” test model looks like a blue and pink paisley snakeskin, wrapped in an oil painting, and topped off with a fever dream. Yeah, it’s trippy. BUT, the doors are removable and interchangeable, so collectors will have plenty of looks to choose from when spare doors hit the market.

(For the record, Ditch Dark is very similar to a black carbon design, but catches the light in interesting ways. Even on the most traditional choice, the Voopoo TOO is an “out of the box” looker.)

We should also mention that the battery doors’ sliding mechanism is easy to use with one hand, and we caught ourselves using the Voopoo TOO 180W Box Mod like a fidget device on more than one occasion.

Let's See What Zophie Says...

The Voopoo TOO 180W Box Mod... Under the Hood

Shiny fidget doors are one thing. But perhaps the company should be pushing the Voopoo TOO for what’s on the inside – most notably, the updated GENE chipset. Our experiences with the previous board were already really good, but early reports say the new edition is one of the fastest firing, most battery-efficient chipsets available today.

In fact, we won’t repeat the efficiency claims we heard until we test the Voopoo Too, but let’s just say they veer into DNA territory. If the updated GENE chip can live up to these expectations, there’s a bigger story to tell in the full review.

The GENE chipset will also provide an adjustable firing power mode selection, which are designed to maximize efficiency in line with output, to make the most of whatever build you’re running. I’m especially curious how this will work in a multiple-battery mod – will the single-battery mode be able to take advantage of these adjustments? Or is this strictly for max-wattage vapers looking to tweak the draw at higher elevations?

On a more structural level, the Voopoo TOO 180W Box Mod comes to the table with a lot of things to like. Aluminum and zinc alloy make up the majority of the frame, which has an ergonomic, “bowed-out” design that sits really nicely in the palm.

The round fire key and operation buttons seem standard issue. But the concave form and placement on a slightly raised platform make them extremely comfortable to use. Likewise, Voopoo TOO’s the 0.96-inch OLED screen won’t “wow” anyone on first glance, but on a mod with so many other bold aesthetic features, we’re not sure a large color screen would do anything but detract from the overall flair.

Also seemingly standard is the spring-loaded 510 connection. But if our previous experience with Voopoo mods is any indication, there won’t be a problem with connectivity, misfires or bad threading.

We don’t know yet if the Voopoo TOO will be firmware upgrade-ready, but we do know there is onboard charging. And we imagine it will be of the 2-amp variety, with a ton of safety features in place, like short circuit, reverse charging and temperature protection.

As a multiple-battery mod, the Voopoo TOO is a unique entity that raises a lot of questions. What’s the point of the single- or dual-battery configuration if there’s no change in form factor? Will the mod have full functionality with just 80-watt output? And most importantly, will there be new slider doors released, or are these four designs the only options?

But the Voopoo TOO also brings a lot of pedigree to back up this bold device. The company’s reputation for building top-quality vape mods is solid, and with this new edition of the GENE chipset, we hope it fires even faster and more efficiently than its predecessors.

Stay tuned – our review will be coming soon, with answers to all of the above and more.
