Portable. What exactly does that mean for a Vape Mod? After all, most any vape device is portable, depending on the size of your pockets, or how much you’re willing to carry. But, as vapers know, some devices are lighter, more streamlined, and more comfortable to tote around each day.

You know… portable.

For the purposes of this Best of Compilation, we’ve omitted some of the obvious choices – most pen vapes and pod mods as well as tiny all-in-one devices that can sit in a shirt pocket without anyone knowing. While we could take the easy way out and simply compile a list of the 10 newest, or most marketed starter kits and call it a day, we put a lot of thought into each and every device chosen for inclusion here. Certainly the criteria of this “Best Of” piece is portability and pocket-friendly, but just as important is “performance” and “value vs cost“. In order to become one of the “chosen” the Mod Kit had to perform supremely well for its portability, and it’s cost to the Vaper must be money well spent.

During the past couple of months we decided to break our #1 Rule that was maintained for more than 6 years; to tell our readers which devices are “best”. Although “best” is as subjective as you can get, we’re not some review site hooked up with affiliate programs and who’s job it is is to write glowing reviews on every product we review so that you’ll buy one and earn us a commission. If that day ever came, well… it wouldn’t. We’d shutter our windows and go home before that happened.

The honest reason we decided to break our own rule about declaring certain mods, tanks, and starter kits “best” is that we are all so sick of seeing Best Of lists throughout the internet that consist of products that we know, we know with complete certainty, are pure over-rated garbage. Yet we continue to see them show up on list after list because the manufacturer, or vendor, pays the website to put their product on a Best Of list, and link it to the product page with an affiliate link. It is maddening to us to see this happen every day. So, we decided to do something about it.

Mods, Tanks, and Kits that Deserve to be Recognized

If you are familiar with Spinfuel VAPE at all you might already know that we have never, and will never, become an affiliate with any company. We will never earn a commission on any product we review. And, if we believe any Vape Mod, Vape Tank, or Starter Kit isn’t very good, or too expensive, or simply not worth your hard-earned money, we’re going to tell you. It has always been like that for us, and we’ve never lost sleep over reviewing any device since February 2012.

These “Best Of” compilations that we’ve been generating for our readers were created to bring forth some truth to the vape community. That means that every mod, tank, and kit you see on any Spinfuel VAPE Best/Top article are devices that can be trusted to do the job they were designed to do, and they have value.

The 10 Starter Kits chosen for this piece are excellent devices that are worth every penny they sell for, and will satisfy the Vaper that owns one. Some of the 10 have been around for a while, many have been reviewed by our team of experts, and some are right now being reviewed (we’ve noted the ones under review below).

We know, and love, the SMOK Stick Prince, and it has made our list below. However, there is another “similar” product coming very soon, the SMOK Resa Stick that we believe will just might be worthy of being on this list.  Although the new SMOK Resa Sub-Ohm Tank is currently under review here, and scoring very well indeed, we’ve not yet seen the Resa Stick, so it cannot be listed here. Unless we’ve spent time with a device, unless we know its worth, its value, and know it to be remarkable, it cannot be included just because it’s new, and it comes from an excellent manufacturer. It just wouldn’t be honest…

SMOK PRIV V8 60W Starter Kit

The diminutive SMOK PRIV V8 is an interesting choice to start up this list, because it came so close to being on a few others. But even though the V8 isn’t a perfect vape mod – especially due to its ultra-simplistic direct-wattage design — if portability and pocket-friendly design is important, it needs to be on your list, as well.

As a direct-wattage mod, experienced vapers will be taken aback by the lack of controls and displays, because – save for a pinhole sized indicator light – there are none. This 80mm tall device features just one input button, and a responsive full-length fire bar, meaning the rest of the inputs are handled by the mod itself, with no input from the user.

The single-18650 PRIV V8 is just 34mm long, and the well-implemented battery door furthers the streamlined aesthetic. This comes alongside a durable, high-gloss paint job, and an altogether solid feel. At just 24.5mm wide, the PRIV V8 isn’t optimized for large (>25mm) tanks, but the included Baby Beast (equipped with direct-wattage “M” type coils) is a perfect fit.

The SMOK PRIV V8 isn’t for everyone but would make an awfully potent little stealth mod for experienced vapers, since these users will likely understand WHY the device works better in certain setups than others, and why they can’t just slap any tank or RDA on the mod.

Regardless, SMOK designed the PRIV V8 for simplicity and portability, two things it gets perfectly right from the moment you hit the fire key.

Wismec Sinuous P80 SW 50W Starter Kit

When I first used the Wismec Sinuous P80 I was upset. We’ve gotten used to numbers in vape product names indicating wattage limits. So when the curiously named P80 was revealed to be a 50-watt vape mod, I was surprised to see just how powerful and potent the mod turned out to be.

Another direct voltage mod, the Sinuous P80 determines an appropriate wattage – again, up to 50 watts – based on the charge left in the 3,000mAh internal battery. This eliminates the guesswork, and the size of the mod, contributing to its overall portability.

But this entry-level focused portable vape mod is also stylish and safe, with a more streamlined design than its larger brethren, and more than enough protection measures to keep newcomers safe, even with the lack of displays and control inputs.

Rounding out this pocket-friendly kit is the rock-solid Elabo Mini sub-ohm tank, which interestingly comes pre-installed with a coil head that’s rated much higher than the Sinuous P80 is capable of going. Yet, we still found the coil to give off better-than-average flavor and vapor, even when the mod was at its max output.

With above average battery life, ample tank capacity, and strong performance at “just” 50 watts, the Sinuous makes for a strong, stealthy mod that would be a fantastic backup, or even a go-to device for a more casual vaper.

Wismec Sinuous P80 SW 50W Battery Specs:

  • 28mm Diameter
  • Internal 3000mAh Rechargeable Battery
  • Maximum Output Wattage: 50W
  • Ergonomic Contour
  • Modernized Sword-Inspired Design
  • Oversized Firing Button
  • Interchangeable Outer Shell
  • LED Battery Light Indicator
  • Dual Circuit Protection
  • MicroUSB Port – Max 1A Charging Current
  • 510 Connection

Wismec Elabo SW Sub-Ohm Tank Specs:

Eleaf Tessera 150W TC Starter Kit

We JUST got the exciting new pocket-friendly Eleaf Tessera 150W mod kit in our office, and we’re already so jazzed by its initial performance (especially for the size) that we agreed to include it in this roundup. Because even with such diminutive dimensions, Eleaf has crammed a ton of amazing features into a tiny space.

For example, the Tessera is powered by a particularly strong 3,400 mAh internal battery, 150 watts of output, full temperature control suite, TCR customization, and a striking new user interface that makes adjustments an absolute breeze. While our time with the Tessera has been limited, we haven’t put down our test models in several days.

Though it’s not related to the mod’s slim design, the Tessera’s all-new display is an early highlight, with crystal clear, full-color readouts of all pertinent information, presented through a very legible and attractive layout. Eleaf has raised its display game over the last year, and we only hope more people are taking notice.

But, to get back to the point of this article – the Tessera is amazingly compact, without being boxy or bulky. Instead, Eleaf has produced a slim, slender, highly ergonomic box with capability to power just about any tank on the market – and with no overhang, I might add. And the flush, almost hidden fire bar only improves the overall look and feel.

The included Ello TS sub-ohm tank sweetens the deal, but with or without the atomizer, the Tessera is an easy choice for any vaper who wants to enjoy higher wattages, without occupying an entire pocket, or half a purse to do so.

Our review hasn’t even hit the streets but we’re pretty sure including the Tessera on this “best of” list will serve as a “spoiler alert” rather than a premature judgment.

Eleaf Tessera 150W TC Box Mod Specs:

  • Integrated 3400mAh Rechargeable Battery
  • Wattage Output Range: 1-150W
  • Maximum Voltage Output: 50A
  • Minimum Atomizer Resistance: 0.05ohm
  • Temperature Control Range: 200-600F
  • Ni200, Titanium, and 316 Stainless Steel Compatibility

  • Ergonomic Soft Contour
  • Beautiful 1.45″ TFT Full Color Display
  • Compact Design with Soft Contour
  • Hidden Firing Bar Mechanism
  • Real Time Clock System
  • Dual Circuit Protection
  • MicroUSB Port – Max 2A Charging Rate
  • Centered Stainless Steel 510 Connection

Wismec CB-60 Starter Kit

For vapers who like the slender, tall pocket-friendly mod design, but who also want a little more control over their experiences, the Wismec CB-60 starter kit presents an attractive option – especially if they are mouth-to-lung (MTL) enthusiasts.

You see, the CB-60 is an ideal size for beginning vapers., at 80mm tall (without tank). But the mod is slender and tall enough to feel like an adult device, not a toy-like “beginner” mod. And, with a 2,300mAh internal battery and zinc alloy construction, the CB-60 has enough heft to feel commanding, but not overly heavy in the hands or the pockets.

While users can make easy adjustments with the clicky button scheme, there’s no temperature control, TCR, bypass or other modes. At first, I figured it was an oversight, considering this is a 60-watt device. However, in the name of simplicity and straightforward operations, Wismec chose to keep the CB-60 wattage-only.

Because of this, the streamlined presentation really only includes wattage/power, puff counts and any protection warnings that might arise. As a protected beginner’s device, there are plenty in place, and they work as expected to keep users safe.

Included in this sharp, well-designed kit is the decent Wismec AMOR MTL tank, which makes for a serviceable throw in. But with a legitimate 60 watts of power, and better battery performance than the 2,300mAh limit lets on, the CB-60 can be pressed into sub-ohm service, as well.

More importantly, the Wismec CB-60 is an absolute breeze to operate, and its durable construction and rock-solid fire and operation keys are extremely responsive. Even the greenest vaper will have no trouble getting the CB-60 set to their liking, while being able to easily stow it away when not in use.

Wismec CB-60 60W Box Mod Specs:

  • Dimensions: 75.9mm by 36.9mm by 22.6mm
  • Internal 2300mAh Rechargeable Battery
  • Output Wattage Range: 1-60W
  • Output Voltage Range: 0.5-9V

  • Designed for Mouth-to-Lung Experience
  • 1.5ohm WS03 MTL Horizontal Coil – rated for 7-13W

Innokin EZ. WATT 35W Starter Kit

Full disclosure: We were REALLY skeptical about the Innokin EZ. Watt 35W starter kit when we first got a hold of one. I mean, with so many more versatile devices on our shelves, why would we want to spend too much time with a 35-watt, 1,500mAh vape mod?

Then we vaped it. And that’s when we learned that this compact little box does a lot more with 35 watts than most mods do with twice that amount. Another direct voltage vape mod, the EZ. Watt keeps things simple with a screenless format, two-button operation, and predetermined wattage levels, depending on the coil installed.

In our limited time with the EZ. Watt, the battery performance wasn’t the best, but we absolutely loved how hard this mod hits, even with a limited wattage output. Using the included Prism S-20 tank, we found the 0.8 and 1.5-ohm coils to be more than capable of delivering top-tier flavor, adequate vapor, and fast-ramping draws, even at lower wattages.

(It’s not too bad as an emergency sub-ohm device, either…)

Most importantly (at least for this article) is just how pocket- and palm-friendly the EZ. Watt really is, and how stealthy it is, even in a shirt pocket. Though there’s plenty of competition in this space, vapers looking for a truly compact, comfortable, PORTABLE vape setup could do far worse than the Innokin EZ. Watt mod.

Innokin EZ WATT Box Mod Specs:

  • 20mm Diameter
  • Integrated 1500mAh Li-Po Battery
  • Variable Wattage Output: 13-35W

  • Maximum Output Voltage: 7.5V

  • Low Voltage Protection

SMOK Stick Prince Kit

The SMOK Stick Prince Kit  was, and still is, a phenomenal addition to the  pen-style vape system from SMOK. Our Review goes into great detail about this worthy Prince Tank and Stick Battery Vape, and with the upcoming Resa Stick from SMOK, it’s about to face some tough competition. Geek Vape Aegis 100W TC Starter Kit

Looking out into the higher performance Kit but staying within the boundaries of this Best Of compilation, let’s look at the stunning Geek Vape Aegis 100W starter kit, which might be the most powerful mod on this list,  it might be the highest performing.

With dimensions of 88mm by 46.8mm by 37.8mm (not to mention some substantial heft), some would question why the Aegis is even on this list. But the mod’s delicate curves and contours make for a tremendously comfortable device to hold, stow and operate, even if it’s not quite as diminutive as other entries in this roundup.

What the Aegis DOES do right is provide a high-powered, all-day capable mod (provided you use the 26650 battery option), that’s a pleasure to operate, and to vape. With a full slate of temperature control features, bypass mode, TCR customization, and more, there’s plenty of technology under the hood. But even in wattage mode, the Aegis ramps fast and hits hard, even at lower wattages.

Plus, with adapters for 18650, 20700 and 21700 batteries, anyone can get in on the enjoyment, regardless of which battery format you prefer.

And when time comes to pocket it, the smooth lines ensure you won’t feel like you’re carrying a high-powered vape mod in your jeans. Even though that’s exactly what you’re doing.

Included within each kit is the Shield Sub-Ohm Tank, a 26mm atomizer with a maximum juice capacity of 4.5 milliliters, convenient flip top-fill design, and the utilization of the IM Coil System. All in all, it’s a capable tank that pairs well with the Aegis… but don’t buy this kit for the tank alone – this is all about the mod.

Innokin PocketBox 40W Starter Kit

Getting back to “less surprising” portable vape mods, here comes the Innokin PocketBox, which isn’t that far removed from the 35-watt EZ. Watt we discussed earlier, save for an entirely different shape. Whereas the EZ. Watt was tall and slender, the PocketBox is a stout, almost square little mod that hits just as hard with limited wattage output.

This compact, lightweight, direct voltage setup is designed to be dropped in a pocket (no pun intended) and left out of the way until needed. Though the modest 1,200 mAh internal battery and 2mL e-liquid capacity certainly don’t scream “all day device” Innokin’s newest AIO hits unbelievably well while it lasts. And it charges quickly to keep you going with minimal delay.

The PocketBox is designed for comfort, and the slender alloy body and rubber grip area make for a portable vape mod that feels good in the hands without ever becoming uncomfortable.

One thing that jumps at you when vaping the PocketBox is how ample the cloud production is using the preinstalled 0.35-ohm direct lung coil. Not only does this coil last a good amount of time, but it’s surprisingly frugal on juice consumption, even when chucking these very respectable clouds.

The PocketBox can also be put to use as an MTL device, with the optional 1.2-ohm coil, but we haven’t had the chance to try that setup just yet.

Still, for quick ramping, hard-hitting performance, there are few pocket-friendly vape mods around that offer this much flavor and vapor at just 40 watts.

Innokin PocketBox 40W Starter Kit Specs:

  • Integrated 1200mAh Rechargeable Battery
  • 2mL Maximum Juice Capacity
  • All-In-One Design – Unibody Box Mod-Like Structure
  • Maximum Wattage Output: 40W
  • Voltage Output Range: 3.3-4.2V
  • Minimum Atomizer Resistance: 0.2ohm
  • Direct Voltage Output System
  • Single Button Operation – Firing Mechanism
  • 0.35ohm Direct Lung (DTL) Coil
  • Dual Top Airflow Control

Shanlaan Laan Pod Mod 40W Starter Kit

Now, I know we started this article by eliminating pod mods from contention. But the intriguing Shanlaan Laan 40W pod mod starter kit (currently under review) is an exception to the rule. Starting with the obvious fact that this beastly, high-end pod mod can achieve 40 watts without breaking a sweat.

No, this isn’t your standard convenience store pod device, friends. The Laan is practically inventing its own category. Whereas most pods barely break 12-15 watts, at the most, the Laan is much more like a more-convenient AIO setup. Thank goodness the 2mL e-liquid pod compartment is refillable, since the Laan tends to use some serious juice when cranked.

This doesn’t even take into account the slender, aluminum tube design, premium leather accompaniments, and the flip-top micro-USB that makes the Laan perfect for stowing in a pocket or purse without worry. And, even though it has nothing to do with portability, the innovative child-lock system, and even Bluetooth connectivity make it clear that Shaanlaan is aiming for an entirely new demographic here.

We are also pleasantly surprised by the 1,300 mAh rechargeable battery, which hardly breaks any records, but lasted a lot longer than initially expected. Users can feel confident taking the Laan out for the day without much concern.

This unique pod mod is a hybrid of a few really good ideas, and serves as a highly portable, altogether satisfying bridge between lower-powered beginner mods, and higher-end performance. Shaanlaan might not be a household name in the vaping community, but we expect it’s a name we’ll hear again soon.

Shanlaan Laan Pod Mod 40W Starter Kit Specs:

  • All-In-One Design
  • 2mL Maximum Juice Reservoir
  • Built-In 1300mAh Internal Battery
  • Maximum Wattage Output: 40W
  • Temperature Control Support
  • Operational Adjustments via Bluetooth Technology

SMOK MAG Baby 50W TC Starter Kit

We opened this piece with a quality SMOK mod, and we’re closing with one, as well. Because, while its big brother is a massive, commanding device, the all-new SMOK Mag Baby is a premier portable vape mod, with many of the same qualities as the original. (Our review is underway, and so far we are very pleased!)

Initially, when I saw the specs of this mini-Mag (not to mention the continued use of the annoying “Baby” moniker), I wasn’t too jazzed. But, as always, the proof is in the performance. And the SMOK Mag Baby is a tremendously strong 50-watt mod, with above-average battery life, and a full slate of features.

Yes, despite its size, the Mag Baby offers full temperature control, safety protection suite, and the undeniably awesome trigger-like fire key, which still feels awesome to use, even in this much smaller format.

Thanks to SMOK’s proven chipset, the Mag Baby makes the most of its internal 1,600mAh battery, with smooth, fast-ramping draws and surprisingly long battery longevity, even when maxed out. And the Mag Baby can accommodate up to 26mm atomizers, offering users a pretty good amount of versatility, since most tanks look pretty damn good on top of the Mag Baby.

That said, the SMOK Mag Baby kit includes the new TFV12 Baby Prince sub-ohm tank, which offers similarly strong performance as its own big brother, and respectable flavor and vapor for a reduced capacity atomizer. Sadly, the tank’s coils are proprietary, so there isn’t any cross-compatibility to be had. But chances are you’ll be too busy enjoying the tank’s performance to care.

Finally, the Mag Baby is truly portable and pocketable, even with the bold, jagged design. SMOK has done a good job replicating the powerful feel of the original, in a package that never feels too bulky, unwieldy or awkward as you might think. It’s just a wonderful, unique entry on a list already filled with them, and a mod we can’t recommend enough to newcomers and vape veterans alike.

And in Conclusion...

Like we said at the top of the page, this list of Top Portable, Pocket-Friendly Vape Mods wasn’t easy to curate. And yes, there are one or two devices on here that might not make your own list. But we feel the list above represents a strong cross-section of mods that can appeal to beginners, experienced users, or any vaper looking for a stealthy, easily carried mod without sacrificing performance and satisfaction.

And, like we always say at the bottom of these lists, we’re 100% sure someone is going to disagree with us, so feel free to let us know what we missed..
