Wismec Luxotic Resin Squonk Box Kit Preview

Well, there’s certainly been no shortage of squonk mods on our desks of late. From the monstrous and powerful Geek Vape GBOX (reviewed here), to the fantastic iJOY Capo Squonk, (reviewed here) bottom-feed enthusiasts have certainly had a good few months. So where does the beautiful Wismec Luxotic Resin Squonk Box fit into the equation? Let’s have a look…

Despite the commanding presence of honeycomb resin in a striking, swirling pattern, the first impression I had of the Luxotic is how diminutive it is – even compared to some of the more popular mechanical squonkers out there. It’s tall, but not overwhelming, and extremely narrow, so it fits really well in the hands.

Speaking of which, we should let you know right off the bat – the Wismec Luxotic Resin Squonk Box is best described as “semi-mechanical.” Imagine one of the newer Noisy Crickets for a basis of comparison. This means that the device operates off battery power, like a mech squonker. But there are protection measures in place to prevent newcomers from potentially dangerous scenarios.

I don’t particularly enjoy mech mods, simply because there are too many good regulated devices out there to make me want to venture into uncharted waters. But I’m also a diligent tester, so expect me to gauge just how “beginner-friendly” the Luxotic actually is.

In an era where displays are becoming both more complex and visually busy, I found the simplicity refreshing. Other than a soft LED light that surrounds the OUTSTANDING fire button, there is no indication that the Luxotic resin squonk mod is even on. No battery indicator for the single 18650 cell. No digital readout. Nothing…

Well, except for the tremendous plumes of vapor we experienced after just a few puffs of the Luxotic, and the included Tobhino RDA. This compact combination made one hell of an impression on me in a very short period of time.

The Tobhino is a tiny RDA. Well, actually, it’s a REALLY tiny RDA. At just 22mm across, a shallow juice well, and practically no distance between the mouthpiece and the coil, this isn’t an atomizer you’ll want to overfill when squonking, for fear of scorching fresh spit-back on your unsuspecting lips.

(For that reason, we don’t recommend using a wide-bore tip here. That’s just asking for some burnt taste buds.)

However, once you get accustomed to the shallow depth, you realize the vibrant, intense flavor that comes from this little gem. We were noticing nuances from our more complex liquids that we hadn’t experienced in some time.

I’ve (literally) only had a few minutes to use the Wismec Luxotic Resin Squonk Box, but there were some things I needed to address. For starters, battery life – without a gauge in place, there’s no way to get a handle on how long this single-18650 mod will last on one cell. I suppose this is a concern of any mechanical device, but since there are regulations in place on the Luxotic, perhaps some type of battery meter would have been appropriate. Let’s hope low battery protection is one of the measures in place.

Secondly, the included translucent squonk bottle seemed AWFULLY stiff and unforgiving during our initial run-through with the Luxotic. I suppose time and use will break in the 7.5mL bottle, but this seemed pretty rigid for an item that was meant to be squeezed with one finger.

While we really enjoyed the performance with the included Tobhino RDA, I have some mild concerns about the stiff squonk bottle in combination with other BF RDAs, as they might require considerably more squeezing and filling throughout the course of a day. Expect this to be a main focus of our testing.

That said, the quick release bottom makes refilling a breeze, with none of the awkward bending and leaking typically associated with squonkers. I do have some concerns that the small removable door piece will fall off with repeated use, but so far, the magnets seem solid and durable.

Finally, I need to see how well the Luxotic will work in a pocket without a firing lock in place. I can imagine more than a few pairs of jeans are going to set off the fantastic fire button, because no security is in place to prevent pocket firing.

Again, I know this is supposed to be a “semi-mechanical” squonk box, but by positioning the Luxotic as a beginner-friendly mod (not to mention giving it such an attractive, beginner-friendly price point), Wismec should have included some warning documentation, if it wasn’t going to protect the fire button.
