The PLY Rock Zilla 60W Compact Box Mod Preview

“Compact” is a word we use a lot around Spinfuel VAPE, but what does it really mean? Well, we don’t have room for that discussion here, but rest assured, if we were going to try and demonstrate our idea of a compact Box Mod, it would look an awful lot like the PLY Rock Zilla.

Our Zilla kits arrived on our desks a few weeks ago, and we’ve spent a little time with them. But right away we could tell that PLY Rock wasn’t playing around when it set out to make a potent, powerful, compact Box Mod. It might not be for everyone (what vape mods are?) but there’s a lot to like about PLY Rock’s newest entry to the beginner/intermediate vape device market.

Let’s take a quick look at what we’ll be testing over the next several days…

Right from the moment you open the well-designed packaging, you can see that the Zilla is a solid, dense, hefty vape mod, with a weightiness that belies it’s diminutive size. But the oddly shaped Zilla was clearly designed with ergonomics in mind, as the trigger-like fire key, subtle curves and well-placed operation buttons lead to a compact Box Mod that can easily be used with one hand.

It doesn’t hurt that the fantastic, rubberized grip makes the Zilla a pleasure to hold. Even though there’s a decent amount of weight in this tiny brick-like Mod, it never becomes cumbersome or unwieldy. And with a decent 2,000mAh internal battery on board, it still manages to avoid being too dense and heavy for its own good.

This is also true of the bright,easy-to-read OLED display, which not only makes things clear for users upon first firing the Zilla, but they’ll also learn more about the functionalities behind the operations, ensuring safe enjoyment throughout.

This is made possible by the simplified menu system that looks fantastic, and makes navigation an absolute breeze for anyone using the Mod – beginners included.

That said, the PLY Rock Zilla isn’t just for entry-level vaping newcomers. In addition to the 60 watts of power, the Zilla also features a fleshed-out temperature control suite, TCR adjustments and a full complement of safety and protection measures, to keep users safe.

On its own, the PLY Rock Zilla is a fantastic, budget-friendly setup for new vapers. But, when you get the kit, complete with the quirky but flavorful Wake tank, users are getting a top-tier pairing that might even have some experienced vapers wondering where to pick one up.

Now, our initial experience with the Wake Tank weren’t perfect. But when it worked right (and the coils lasted) the flavor was unparalleled.

In fact, we’d argue that the Wake Tank is one of the most flavorful vapes around. After the initial coil break in, I was in love with the rich, nuanced flavor performance. And after a tankful or two, the vapor mass and consistency improve, as well, without reducing flavor quality one iota.

Though they’re not necessarily designed for one another, the 24mm Wake Tank is a natural match for the Zilla – it’s just a matter of whether or not the coils will hold their own, or falter like they did the first time we experienced the atomizer. Of course, this will be a big part of our testing over the next few weeks.

Another minor gripe? The tank still isn’t being packed with the available RBA head, which is a shame, because that would make the PLY Rock Zilla kit an even better value, while also teaching newcomers on how to build – possibly for the first time. While I understand sub-ohm tanks are a consumables business, a gesture like this would go a long way toward attracting people to this great combination kit.

I think it’s clear we’re pretty excited about the PLY Rock Zilla 60W compact Mod Kit. If there are any concerns (beyond what we’ve already stated) it’s that the internal 2,000mAh battery might not be enough for a full day of vaping, even with the fast onboard USB charging.

Yes, I know this is a 60-watt Mod, and not a 240-watt cloud chucker. But chances are, new users are going to push this potent little device, which will test the battery capacity. Given the density of the Mod, I would have expected something a little larger to keep vapers going throughout the day. Especially since so many internal battery mods are coming with 5,000 (and even up to 8,000) mAh cells.  We’ll be watching this closely during testing.
