What’s a wolf without teeth? Kind of a sad, bulky dog. Unfortunately, despite a stellar lineage of high-wattage vape mods and pod hybrids, the all-new Snowwolf TAZE 40-watt pod system is an underwhelming entry into a crowded field.

While tSnowwolf TAZE here are some high points to be had with the TAZE kit, there’s not much likelihood that it’s going to light up the pod mod market, due to some limp coils and middling flavor. But, they don’t pay me to write one paragraph reviews. So, let’s dive in and start arguing.

Check out the Snowwolf TAZE Pod Kit, a compact pod system equipped with an integrated 1600mAh rechargeable battery, wattage range of 5-40W, and can hold up to 4.5mL of eJuice or nicotine salts within the refillable pod. Constructed from durable zinc-alloy, the TAZE Pod Kit encases a IFV960 smart chipset within its protective housing.

Achieving a wattage output range of 5-40W, the Snowwolf TAZE is capable of an AUTO and RBA mode to accommodate both those that like DIY or replacement coils. With outstanding coil support, the TAZE can access the alpha, beta, and gamma variants of the coil series, offering mesh coil options to deliver tasty clouds of vapor.

Aesthetics of the Snowwolf TAZE

Maybe this review got off to an auspicious start, but one thing you’re virtually guaranteed with Snowwolf mods is build quality, and the TAZE is no exception. The compact zinc alloy frame is about as bulletproof as mods get these days, and our test model survived more than its share of dings and drops during our evaluation period.

One nice feature is the HUGE viewing area for the magnetic 4.5mL pod attachment. Most pod mods make you squint and hold up a light source just to check liquid levels. Here, you could assess your juice needs in a dimly lit room. We’ve been calling for this forever, so kudos to Snowwolf for making it happen.

Another notable design choice is the heavyweight, knurled top fill cap. I think we can all agree that the “rubber gasket” fill port is tired and overdone (not to mention messy) so this easy, no fuss solution was a welcome addition for anyone tired of wasting liquid and paper towels.

Finally, the OLED display, while not a game changer by any means, was a clear and responsive addition to the experience. Though the mod works best in auto mode, which detects the coils accurately, the display worked well when making more fine-tuned adjustments.

Vaping the Snowwolf TAZE Kit

Sadly, for the TAZE, beauty only runs skin deep. Because underneath the durable frame and awesome aesthetics lies a confusion collection of middling flavor and questionable performance.

For starters, the included “direct lung” coils are far too snug to be considered serious contenders for higher-wattage vaping. Sure, the TAZE has a 40-watt capacity, but as soon as the smart coil detection set my wattage to the max, I knew I’d have to lower the power immediately. Even at half that power, both the included 0.3 and 0.6-ohm heads seemed excessively warm with muted flavors.

(Even with nic salt juices in the tank, the flavors never sang, and only hinted at the subtleties and nuances I know exist in those blends.)

Worse, the small juice flow entry points made dry hits a far too common occurrence. Even after the coils broke in after a day or so, the coils never quite felt like they were hitting on all cylinders. And before long, they started to burn out and fail — a combined three days of use for each, with neither head ever showing what it was capable of.

Speaking of longevity, an integrated 1,600mAh cell should have offered a full day’s worth of steady vaping. Instead, I enjoyed MAYBE 3-4 hours of life, depending on how many adjustments I made during testing. On a smaller device, this might be forgivable, but for a higher-end pod setup, this was extremely disappointing.

Finally, as we mentioned before, the coils get far too warm, even at middle ranges of output, making the mouthpiece and draw uncomfortable after repeated use. If I’m burning my lips at 20-25 watts, something is wrong.

Pros:

  • Awesome, durable frame
  • Great viewing of liquid levels
  • Nice display

Cons:

  • Horrendous battery life
  • Weak coil flavor and performance
  • Excessive heat

Bottom Line of the Snowwolf TAZE

As much as we want to like everything that comes across our desk, some products never really get out of the proverbial gates. Unfortunately, Snowwolf had some great ideas with the TAZE, but the execution fell short of what we’ve come to expect from the company. With improved coils (and maybe a firmware upgrade to improve battery life and heat distribution) the TAZE might be rectified, but for now, with so many competitors, we can’t recommend this one very highly.
