Much like the engine that inspired previous Augvape mods, the VX217 is meant to be lean, streamlined, and free of nonsense. In that sense, Augvape’s latest delivers. It’s not a forward-thinking vape device, and it has one major flaw in the box. So, if this one caught your eye, definitely keep reading to see if the VX217 is really the next mod you want for your collection.

Aesthetics of the Augvape VX217

The VX217 is a stout, WISMEC-inspired device (remember those pentagonal JayBo joints?) The look is authentic, with smooth lines and a rock-solid zinc alloy construction throughout. It’s bare bones, though. So, if you’re seeking some padding or ergonomic cutouts, please move along – it’s metal on metal throughout.

Another noticeable design feature is the sublimely responsive fire key, which blends seamlessly into the top of the black display section above the OLED screen. On several occasions, I had to remind myself to press this key, and not the shiny black adjustment wheel below the screen. Nothing tragic, but it’s not the MOST intuitive thing we’ve used this year.

Twins - Augvape VX217 Mod Kit Review by Spinfuel VapeThe 1.3-inch display was surprising, just by virtue of its simplicity. After seeing so many same-y designs, of late, I was pleasantly underwhelmed by Augvape’s subtlety here. As a functional screen, it works, with all pertinent information on display, clearly and legibly.

Bullet Proof 510-Connection

Finally, I loved the bulletproof 510 connection, but wonder why a hefty, burly vape mod like the VX217 wouldn’t have a centered position, rather than the offset one on display here. As a result, while the dual-21700 VX217 handled all my test atomizers (except for one), anything larger than 28mm had significant parts hanging beyond the edge.

But I have to say, there’s something a little “off” about the way the VX217 sits in the hand. Maybe it’s just my famous man-child digits, but I never felt like the device was truly comfortable to hold.

And the lack of comfort does take its toll after a while. No matter which grip I used, I struggled to find a truly natural way to hold and operate the VX217. It never HURT, mind you. But it never felt quite right, either. And before long, I found myself looking to grab more comfortable mods from my collection.

Vaping the Augvape VX217 box mod

Side by - Augvape VX217 Mod Kit Review by Spinfuel VapeThough there’s an obligatory temp control and TCR suite, power vaping is the focus of the Augvape VX217 mod, and it delivers in a big way. Not only does the mod hit 200 watts without a drop of elbow grease, but it also ramps faster than most – if not all – of the comparable mods in my collection.

I’m not sure of the chipset involved, but the VX217 proved to be among the quickest-ramping devices around – even at top wattages. And it stays smooth all the way up the ladder. This performance is most evident north of 120 watts, where many dual-18650 devices begin to stutter under heavy use.

Instead of stuttering, the dual-21700 capable VX217 just adjusts on the fly, smoothly and surely getting to the desired power level. Still, even at more conservative wattages, the ramp-up is still noticeable, and my 60-80-watt draws felt more substantial throughout.

To Be Fair…

To be fair, there are some negatives. First, the battery life — even when using the larger cells — was middling at best, giving me just a few hours of steady, moderate vaping before needing to be replaced. I appreciate any device that lets me dust off the larger batteries in my collection, but this isn’t a good showing for the format.

Coil - Augvape VX217 Mod Kit Review by Spinfuel VapeMore severely, the included Augvape Intake tank isn’t worth much ink. While the included Clapton mesh coils certainly fit the bill for flavor and vapor production, the heads wear out in just a few days, never really getting to full stride before tapping out.

Plus, the Intake tank needed a few more hours in the design room before being released.  I experienced bad leaking issues with both coils, but the 510 pin repeatedly lost connection with the mod when tipping it toward my mouth.

And Not occasionally. Not even frequently. I mean EVERY time. It got to the point where the tank was completely unusable, and negatively affected my experience with the VX217 kit.

Pros:

  • Throwback, “WISMEC-like” design
  • Fantastic fire key
  • Nice, simple display

Cons:

  • Poor battery life and coil longevity
  • Included tank is terrible
  • The size just seems a little “off”

Bottom Line of the VX217

With a sizable footprint and throwback design, the VX217 definitely has the goods to stand out on any shelf. But is that enough reason to buy one?  While there are some notable limitations in the box (and a bad tank, to boot), and some severe hindrances to comfort, the fast-ramping performance might just be enough to get people to look past the problems.

Score: C+
