SMOK MAG P3 230W & TFV16 STARTER KIT PREVIEW

For the longest time it has felt, to me and many others, that pod mod systems had taken over the marketplace. There was no longer any room for Vapers that enjoy a mid to high level wattage (or a temperature control mod… well….) or sub-ohm tanks with massive e-liquid capacity and low-resistance that provides glorious flavors and thick vapor.

No, I’m not trying to tell you that it’s all been doom and gloom on the ‘product’ level of things, (on the corrupt politicians and really ignorant people in a moral panic, that’s another story) but there have been some decently powered starter kits all the while. But the MAG P3? No, no, P3 is more than 230W of power accompanied by the TFV16 sub-ohm tank.

The SMOK MAG P3 Starter Kit – Most Improved Award

For most people, including myself, the most important factor when choosing a “real” vape mod and sub-ohm tank boils down to 2 factors that cannot be overlooked; comfort, as in how it feels in the hand, and how easy it is to get a great vape. I can overlook some things, but comfort and performance are the utmost.

Comfort in the Hand

SMOK is using a new, richer, softer rubberized finish on the MAG P3. This is the first device from SMOK to use it, and it does feel magnificent. With its large OLED color & touchscreen display, dual 18650 cells, and the largest, most powerful sub-ohm yet, the P3 has a heft, but not an unwelcome one.

The richness of the way it feels in the hand, the pistol grip design (complete with a similar ‘trigger’ placement of the original MAG, cannot be overlooked.)

Design Tweaks That Work

The original SMOK MAG (photo left) used a metal button that released a dual 18650 ‘clip’ like an automatic pistol. Pressing that button propelled the clip with a certain force that reminded me of actually changing clips in my gun. It felt powerful, but to many it felt ‘too much’ like a weapon. So SMOK did some tweaking.

Instead of the metal button that jettisoned the battery clip, the MAG P3 is designed with a push button at the button of the P3 that releases a battery door for the 18650 cells to fall out easily. It seems like such a simple adjustment to the original design, but its more than that. I don’t know, it’s just… nice…

Touchscreen Comes to the MAG

While the MAG P3 and the original MAG have similar looking displays, it’s been redesigned and now uses an excellent touchscreen technology. Using it is simple and effective.

Simple Navigation

At the bottom of the active display you’ll see an animated bar inviting you to use your finger and slide it across the bar. When you do it will reveal a small icon reading “my mod”. Touch the ‘my mod’ icon and the menu comes alive, offering you the following options…

1. 3 Memory Programmable buttons.
2. Clicking on My Mod #1 you’ll see
   1. Mode, preheat setting, Nicotine strength, and a way to type in the flavor of the e-juice.

Preset to your Preference

The user can preset their MAG P3 for 3 separate tanks or coils, or tanks and coils. Set the wattage, the preheat setting, the nicotine level and the flavor of the e-juice, and when the tank is changed, set the ‘my mod’ to the correct one and off you go.

Because it is an effective touchscreen, it will go into Lock mode when you get back to the basic display; itself offering a plethora of information.

And in case the corrupt politicians get their way and outlaw these basically harmless products, you might want to pick up a couple….

The Upcoming Review

The release of this new flagship for SMOK deserves a Preview if only to get Vapers that want a powerful, and beautiful, device. But before we can render our final thoughts on the Starter Kit we’ll have to use it for 2 weeks to make sure that what we said here, and what we say in a couple of weeks, is the truth. So far we’re loving the SMOK MAG P3. I don’t think that will change.

IQ-S Chipset

This powerful new chip makes it possible for the P3 (and a couple of other SMOK devices like the Morph) to utilize a new generation of Touchscreen technology. In addition, a near instant firing rate of just 0.001 sec.

It also allows for a full 230W of power from just 2 18650 cells. Most importantly, in my 4-day experience of using the P3, the power/wattage yields power till the very last drop of battery power.

Lastly, for those Vapers still hanging on to Temperature Control (using Nickel, Titanium, and Stainless-Steel coil material), the IQ-S Chipset allows for the most accurate temperatures based on the metal used.

9mL Capacity – Performance and MESH coil quality will be discussed in the upcoming Review, but for now I can tell you that you’ll be very pleased with the vape you get from any of the TFV16 coils.

The Starter Kit includes two excellent coil choices; 1x 0.17ohm TFV16 Single Mesh Coil

And 1x 0.12ohm TFV16 Dual Mesh Coil – The dual Mesh is so large it takes a bit of practice to properly screw it in. It took several tries in order to get a number of vape mods to recognize it.
