Don’t call it a throwback! We just received the all-new Joyetech Exceed D19 starter kit, and are excited to see Joyetech’s latest entry into its line of vape pens and beginner-focused mods, designed to help people easily transition to more-advanced vaping.

“ELEMENT

Though, perhaps that description is too limiting, since the veteran vape company promises some significant clouds with its included sub-ohm coil. Let’s see if we can get a better understanding of the Exceed D19.

First off, this 1,500 mAh internal battery device is a direct-power output mod, meaning there are no adjustments to make, or menus to decipher. Using the included D19 tank and EX coils, the Exceed D19 will read what you’ve attached, adjust itself based on battery power and coil resistance, and let you puff without worry. It’s a format Joyetech has mastered since the early days of vaping, and they’ve only gotten better with time.

At 118 mm tall, this is about as short as a pen-style vape gets, short of reverting to a cig-a-like form factor. And, with just 19mm of circumference, the Exceed D19 is just a hair wider than the classic eGo devices that got so many of us into more advanced vaping.

Because this is a direct output device, power is determined by how much battery life remains. However, this is no mechanical mod; advanced protections and shutoff features are well-implemented so beginners never find themselves draining battery or pocket firing without knowing it. There is also a handy flashing battery life LED which clearly indicates when power is getting a little too low for a quality vape.

There is also a constant voltage setting which puts a little more control in the hands of the user. We’re interested to see how this mode performs in comparison to the more traditional direct output arrangement.

More interesting about this kit is the Exceed D19 tank, which has a respectable 2mL capacity – impressive for such a diminutive vape mod. Considering one of the two included EX coils is a 0.5-ohm direct lung offering, you might need to keep that juice bottle handy when taking the Exceed out on the town.

The other coil is a 1.2-ohm head designed for either MTL or restricted lung hits. In a nice touch, both included coils are made from Nichrome, rather than the usual Kanthal, leading to heads that heat quickly, but also cool quickly, allowing for short, powerful draws to vapers seeking a stealthy puff when the mood strikes.

The Exceed D19 tank is a completely separate device, so users will have the option to attach other tanks to the D19 pen, though they should be sure the attached coils are appropriate for direct output vaping. It’s not quite a versatile system, but it certainly affords beginners more flexibility than all-in-one systems currently offer.

We have two Exceed D19 kits in use as we write this, and will report back soon with a full breakdown of how they perform. Stay tuned!
