asMODus x Ultroner Luna Squonk Box Preview

Stabilized wood and squonk mods are two of the biggest trends in vaping right now, and asMODus has married the two in a collaboration with Ultroner, resulting in a beautiful device known as the Luna Stabilized Wood Squonker.

But trends don’t necessarily make for good vaping – just ask the countless touchscreen mods that never made it past the bottom shelf. In order to make an unregulated squonk mod attractive to the masses, the Luna needs to be more than just beautiful. It needs to work like a dream.

We only just got a Luna in our hands, but we have some observations to share as we head into our week of review.

Okay, let’s get this out of the way – the AsMODus x Ultroner Luna Stabilized Wood Squonkeris gorgeous. Stab-wood mods are popular for a reason – they’re beautiful and durable and can withstand a lot of use and abuse before showing significant wear. This is why so many older stab-wood vape devices are still in people’s rotations today, even if technology has far surpassed those models.

My red, speckled test model is extremely appealing, even if it closely resembles the morning after New Year’s in Times Square. With a strange confetti-meets-fireworks appearance, there’s a good chance this won’t appeal to everyone… but there’s really nothing else on the vape market that looks like this particular Luna, a selling point unto itself.

Other than the top and bottom plates, and the plasticky, side-mounted fire button, the mod is almost entirely stabilized wood. There’s just enough texture on the surface of the Luna to give users a comfortable grip, without ruining the sleek, smooth appearance. It feels very good in the hands… well, your right hand, anyway.

The positioning of Luna’s side-mounted fire button is a source of concern. I’m right-handed, but I generally use my left hand to hold and fire my mods. But doing so in my left hand produced some very awkward grips, no matter which way I was holding the mod.

In my right hand, things became much easier, especially when using my thumb to fire. I don’t feel asMODus gave this design the thought it deserved, because the concave, flush fire button just never quite felt right during our initial run-through. I’m curious to see if my opinion changes over the course of my testing. But for right now, it’s a red flag.

For a squonker focused on simplicity, our first few experiences with the asMODus x Ultroner Luna Stabilized Wood Squonker had some hiccups. Most notably, with the included squonk bottles. These bottles themselves are wonderful, with that soft, sumptuous gel-like texture that is a breeze to squeeze, and easy to operate with any finger.

This is great. But removing the bottle from the compartment was an exercise in futility for most of my first day with the Luna. I needed to aggressively pinch the bottle to slide it downwards and refill it. Of course, this led to more leakage and cleaning than I was comfortable with for a new mod.

Only now, a few days later, has the tube’s grip on the bottle loosened. But in that time, I’ve lost a few milliliters of liquid, and countless paper towels trying to keep moisture away from the circuitry. I’ll be watching this closely during the week of testing.

Finally, I’m very concerned about the lack of battery orientation markings on the Luna. Though the mod has more than its share of protections in place, this is still a largely unregulated device, and omitting the most basic of safety measures seems like a major oversight on the part of the collaborators.

Thankfully, the asMODus x Ultroner Luna Stabilized Wood Squonker has a full protection suite, and a straightforward LED light system to indicate when things aren’t working as intended. Is it as easy as a screen display? Of course not. But for those who want an uncluttered layout, and a little peace of mind, this system will likely be adequate.

During my limited time using the Luna so far, I activated the low resistance and low battery warnings, but was concerned that the mod continued operating for a short while after the lights began flashing, rather than shutting down completely to protect the user. They eventually deactivated once my finger stopped pressing the fire key, but it’s worth noting for those who are sensitive about safety.

Our week-long testing will try to get to the bottom of this concern.

It’s hard to say how the vape quality will be on the asMODus x Ultroner Luna Stabilized Wood Squonker, since we’ve only just put it to work. But I can say with confidence that the few puffs I’ve taken (in between cleaning and refilling) were strong. The Luna is capable of an 80-watt maximum, and the squonk action was smooth and effortless. Perhaps it’s not the dream device for high-wattage enthusiasts, but the Luna more than delivers smooth hits and steady power.

We have a lot of questions and concerns, but we’re still excited about the potential of this stab-wood beauty.
