Now that the world is opening up, we’re absolutely thrilled to start getting new products to review. Sure, we’ve done some pod mod reviews over the last few weeks. But when the new shipment included a brand-new DNA device? Yeah, we automatically moved it to the head of the line. Introducing the Dovpo x Signature Tips Mono SQ DNA75C mod.

Now that the initial excitement has subsided, does the Mono SQ live up to the DNA lineage? Or does it fall into the same traps we’ve started noticing over the last year or so?

Well, you’re just gonna have to read on, starting with the specs.

Check out the Dovpo mono SQ Box Mod, featuring a wattage range of 1-75W, 0.96″ TFT Color Display, and is equipped with an extensive temperature control suite. Constructed from durable aluminum alloy, the chassis of the mono SQ Mod can accept a single 18650 battery, sold separately, and is installed behind the magnetic chassis panels. In addition, the single 18650 battery powers the Evolv DNA75C Chipset within, allowing for a wattage range of 1-75W, while maintaining plenty of safeties and protections. Featuring an ergonomic grip, the mono SQ feels nice in hand and can be utilized with any 510 threaded connection tank or rebuildable available on the vaping market segment.

Aesthetics of the Tips Mono SQ

DNA devices are typically a little “higher-end” when it comes to aesthetics. So, I was a little surprised by the simplistic exterior of the Mono SQ. There’s no leather. No carbon fiber. No exquisitely detailed touches. Just an aluminum alloy box, with odd, curved cutouts for the grip area.

That’s it — so if you’re a fan of simple, unadorned designs, the Mono SQ might fit the bill. Me? I was a little underwhelmed.

Also, can we talk about the name “SQ”? Of ALL the random letter combinations these companies apply to new vape devices, why on earth would they choose the two letters most associated with squonk devices? I half expected the Mono SQ to be a DNA-powered squonker, but instead got the single-18650 device you see here.

Other than that, Dovpo finished the Mono SQ well, with perfect build quality, connections and tactile feel. It feels good in the hand and is laser-responsive in use. I suppose that’s what really matters.

Finally, as we’ve mentioned many times before, the DNA75C chipset is getting a little long in the tooth. If you’re looking for some type of new development or progress from the 75C, you’re going to be let down. Sure, the TFT screen is sharp and legible, and the chip remains as precise as ever. But with so many companies closing the gap these past few years, we’re calling for Evolv to live up to their name and set a new standard.

Vaping the Mono SQ

Despite the aesthetic complaints, the classic DNA menu system hasn’t been changed a bit, and we’re thankful for that. It might not be the most intuitive menu operation, but it remains logical and user-friendly, especially given the intricacy of the circuitry underneath.

In short, the Mono SQ brings the best of the DNA75C chipset to the table, with precise wattage and temp control operation, temp protection, support for all major coil types, and battery life optimization. More importantly, the Escribe PC software allows users to easily customize every aspect of the vape experience.

Obviously, the DNA chipset is going to deliver straightforward performance, so there’s no surprise there. But I was nonetheless impressed by how powerful the Mono SQ was, even with a relatively low wattage threshold.

Using a 25mm RTA, with a standard 24-gauge Kanthal build, registering around 0.24 ohms, I was floored by how much power came flowing through the atomizer, producing a warm, rich vape. At just 60 watts – which is not a small amount of power by any means – I felt I enjoyed the same vape quality some other mods offer at 80-90 watts.

Overpowered?

This begged the question – is the Mono SQ actually overpowered? Or are many of today’s mods simply underpowered? I don’t have professional equipment to gauge power output, but after reviewing hundreds of these devices, I know that this is a perfect example of how proper hardware and software can equal an amazing vape – one that doesn’t require three digits’ worth of power to produce.

The built-in protection suite was rock-solid. I have a few coils that I use specifically for testing protection warnings, and just as advertised, the Mono SQ throws a warning at and below 0.1 ohms. These protection features are fairly common these days, but I’ve seen more than one completely fail. The Mono SQ offers no such concerns.

Perhaps most impressive about the Mono SQ’s operation is the top-notch battery life. Using a fresh Nitecore 3100mAh/35A cell, the device gave me an extremely impressive 5 hours of assertive use – usually at or near the mod’s max of 75 watts. At no point did the Mono SQ waver, even at the upper echelon of its capabilities.

No matter which tank or RDA I used, the Mono SQ vaped unbelievably well. And it did it with simple style. With just one or two exceptions, all of my tanks and drippers looked to be natural extensions of the device.

Pros:

  •  DNA75C chipset is rock solid
  • The simple design is ergonomic and comfortable
  • Excellent battery life for a single-18650 mod

Cons:

  • The design is boring by DNA mod standards
  • Price is a little prohibitive in 2020
  • The chipset is getting old, man

Bottom Line for the Tips Mono SQ

If you’re a DNA mod enthusiast, then you’ve probably already made up your mind about buying the Mono SQ. And if you do, you’ll be rewarded with unbelievable precision, strong battery life, and a top-tier mid-wattage vape. But if you’re looking for innovation, high-end design and something altogether “different,” the Mono SQ isn’t going to surpass devices like the Lost Vape Paranormal in your collection.

The Mono SQ is an excellent mod, make no mistake. But DNA fans might be left feeling a little flat this time around.
