A new 2019 Sub-Ohm Tank Campion? After worrying that SMOK was slowing down its pipeline at the beginning of 2019, our fears have been quelled (somewhat) in the last few months, thanks to a steady flow of new, exciting products from the venerable vape giant. The latest? The massive, monstrous SMOK TFV16 sub-ohm tank.

SMOK TFV16 Sub-Ohm Tank PREVIEW

Is this Sub-Ohm TFV16 big?

Black SMOK TFV16 TankYeah, it’s big. Suffice it to say, it’s not really fair to call the TFV8 a “Beast” much longer. Boasting a gargantuan 32mm diameter, 9mL e-liquid capacity and new levels of airflow control, SMOK is poised to reclaim the sub-ohm throne – a seat it might have never actually lost in the first place, but all the same, consider the TFV16 a knockout punch attempt for the industry.

So, what about the TFV16 separates it from other SMOK tanks? At first glance, not much. I mean, other than the huge diameter, that is. The look and feel is distinctly “SMOK” and the TFV16 will sit alongside the rest of its lineup nicely, with the same levels of craftsmanship and quality we’ve come to expect from the company.

Where it differs most is in its latest line of coils, which now use the “plug and puff” format more companies are turning to, rather than the threaded, screw-in design. Though I’m not sure of the advantage from switching to this style, a million other vape companies can’t be wrong, so I’m confident there’s a definite use-case reason in play.

But overall, this looks like a massive new addition to the SMOK Sub-Ohm Tank lineup, and it has our attention. Let’s see the full line of specs:

Mesh Coils TFV16Our Hopes for the SMOK TFV16

Our primary hope for this tank is that the new coils are an extension of the recent SMOK TF tank coils, which are some of our team’s favorite “go to” atomizers for flavor and vapor production. Like those coils, the TFV16 heads are taller and narrower, with larger juice flow ports, meaning increased amounts of liquid capacity, and less likelihood of clogging or dry hits.

We also hope the new airflow control provides more incremental control than we’ve experienced in the past. Usually, with sub-ohm tanks, once the airflow is adjusted more than halfway, it might as well be wide open. But what we’re reading here implies more fine-tuning possibilities, allowing more restriction for direct lung vapers, and even some opportunity to use the TFV16 as a restricted lung tank.

It’s a big “ask” to be sure, but we’re confident that SMOK wouldn’t be touting the setup if there wasn’t some merit to the design.

Our Fears About the SMOK TFV16

Slide-top TFV16 Sub-Ohm TankThe SMOK TF series represented a shift away from the “cloud beast” mentality that pervaded many of its efforts over the last few years. While we understood that cloud production was a major selling point for vape products, the industry has shifted since 2016, and we hope that this larger, more capacious tank isn’t just here to fog public areas.

More importantly, we hope that the new coil system is as focused on flavor as the TF series… because that lineup certainly clouded things just fine, without sacrificing taste and enjoyment. Let’s face it, many tanks from that period were ONLY focused on cloud production, with flavor put off to the side. We certainly hope this isn’t a nostalgia trip down that era of vape history.

That said, we see three coils listed on the specs, so there’s plenty of opportunity to find out which variety delivers the best combination of rich flavor and satisfying vapor.

The SMOK TFV16 will be on our desks before you know it. And once we put it through a few rounds of our fearsome testing procedure, we’ll be back with a comprehensive review. But if you’re a SMOK fan, it’s pretty safe to assume you’ll need to clear some serious shelf space when this monster hits the streets. Stay tuned!
