SMOK G150 TC Box Mod Kit Full Review Spinfuel VAPE Magazine

I knew from the manufacturer product shots released some time ago that the SMOK G150 TC Box Mod, Full Kit version ($69.99 Vapor Authority) was going to be a beautiful mod and the addition of the SMOK TFV8 Big Baby Sub-Ohm Tank was a smart choice, but what I did not even suspect was that SMOK would make the G150 with an internal 4200mAh battery.

At first I was totally bummed out about the battery. Something this gorgeous, and let me tell you, it is a gorgeous machine, should never have to go down for a charge. But, the more I used the SMOK G150 the more I learned to overlook this one big flaw. Well, maybe not a flaw, but certainly a disappointment.

Within a week of using it daily I became a fan. In fact, I have replaced one of my usual daily use mods for the SMOK G150 and Big Baby Tank ($21.99 at Vapor Authority). I bought myself a silver body G150 with comes with a stainless steel Big Baby tank.

SMOK Gets It Right?

The SMOK G150 is immediately identified as a SMOK box mod by its many design aesthetics. The beautiful OLED display found on other SMOK devices like the SMOK Alien, and the SMOK AL85, is also here on the SMOK G150. The SMOK G150 alters just a bit by a slight curvature on the backside of the body, which is ideal for a good grip, but it also shows that the 4200mAh internal battery is probably two hi-amp, 2100mAh 18650 batteries.

The currently available colors are sure to expand if the SMOK G150 becomes as popular as the SMOK Alien 220. Right now, Vapor Authority has the Black/Red, the Black/Gold, and the Stainless/Black.

The Choice for Internal Batteries

I would love to talk with the product manager of the SMOK G150 to find out why he or she decided not to use the more popular, replaceable 18650 battery setups like so many other SMOK devices, because, for the life of me, I cannot figure it a reason why the internal battery is better in this case. That said, after using the SMOK G150 for several days I still love the damn thing, and I have figured out a way to live with its internal, non-replaceable battery configuration.

The Inevitable Comparison

Although there is so much in common between the SMOK Alien 220 and the SMOK AL85, which is really an Alien mini, it will be inevitable to want to compare the almost-perfect SMOK Alien 220 to the new SMOK G150. However, on close inspection there isn’t many points to compare to. It’s more of a feeling than an actual list of comparisons.

The maximum wattage output of the SMOK G150 is 150 watts. The SMOK Alien is 220 watts. Yet, the SMOK Alien achieves the 220 watts on a pair of hi-amp 18650 batteries.
Give SMOK ‘props’ for being able to achieve 220 watts with just two 18650 batteries. The chipset used in the Alien does a helluva job getting that wattage. Yet, the SMOK G150 is shorter, wider, heavier, with curves, and maxes out at 150 watts.

The SMOK Alien utilizes a Firing Panel on the side of the device, while the SMOK G150 uses a relatively small Firing Button. The black opaque glass on both devices use the same OLED display, but the OLED light is whiter with the G150, while the SMOK Alien has a more pronounced blue tint. Other than the tint of the OLED’s, both displays are the same size, display the same information, and are, the same screen component.

Lastly, when comparing the SMOK Alien Kit with the SMOK G150 Kit there is one last thing that sticks out in a big way; the SMOK G150 comes with the SMOK TFV8 Big Baby Tank with a juice capacity of 5mL, while the SMOK Alien 220 comes with a SMOK TFV8 Baby Beast with a juice capacity of 3mL. Both the Alien and the G150 can support a 24.5mm diameter tank, so the TFV8 Big Baby would be right at home on the SMOK Alien Kit. I admit it has made me wonder why SMOK did not decide to use the Big Baby on the Alien Kit.

What I like About the SMOK G150 TC Box Mod Kit

Obviously, I like the TFV8 Big Baby sub-ohm tank choice, it is one of my all-time favorite sub-ohms. I rarely, if ever, exceed 150W, so for 99.99% of my personal vaping, 150 watts of the G150 fills my needs.

I like the ‘heft’ of the G150. It is heavier than the Alien 220, and larger (except in height), and it feels substantial when holding it.

I love the aesthetics of the G150. It is a beautiful box mod and the TFV8 Big Baby sits perfectly atop the mod.

More importantly, during my personal vaping time I find myself reaching for the SMOK G150 much more often than the Alien 220, or the GX350, or anything else. It’s not the ‘newness’ of the device, I don’t think, that makes me want to use it more, it’s something else, and I can’t quite put my finger on it. When I look it at, it whispers “pick me up”…

What I Don’t Like About the SMOK G150 TC Box Mod Kit

Initially, I disliked the 4200mAh internal battery concept vehemently. I thought it was a major blunder by SMOK, and who knows, it could very well wind up to be. But, after many days of using it I’ve been averaging 8-10 hours per charge, sometimes longer on lighter vaping days.

To keep it charged up and ready for the next day, I’ve set up a USB charger on my nightstand and before I go to sleep, or whenever I decide to stop using it for the day, I’ll attach it to the USB cable and the next morning it’s fully charged and ready to go.

So, while I love the idea of SMOK releasing a replaceable battery version of the G150, say, the SMOK G150R or something, I can live with the 4200mAh of power available to me. The battery management on the board is very, very good.

Aesthetics in Photos

I’ve included several photos in this review so that you can get a good look at the shape, size, and all the other characteristics that make this new box mod one of the most beautiful yet from SMOK.

Bottom Line

Before I paid for my SMOK G150 I knew the internal battery was not ideal for me, but I wanted it anyway. I do not regret that decision because I like it more every day. Should SMOK deliver a replaceable battery version I’ll be first in line.

If you’re trying to decide between the SMOK Alien Kit and the SMOK G150 Kit, it will not be an easy call. Both a great at what they do, the deciding factors probably lie below, in the Features and Specs list.
