Teslacigs Punk Pod Kit Review – It seems like everyone is making pod mod systems now. Seriously, we’re hearing rumblings that Microsoft is thinking of relaunching the Zune as a pod mod. [ED. NOT true! Stop setting us up for lawsuits!].
Well, of all the myriad pod vapes that cross our desks each week, very few actually jump out for being especially attractive. Sure, some have little carbon accents. Or some fake resin touches. Some are just nice and clean. But man were we happy when the Teslacigs Punk Pod arrived in the office. Because Teslacigs (and that awesome steampunk aesthetic) makes beautiful vape gear.
So, it’s no surprise that once Teslacigs decided to put out its own version of an advanced pod mod system, it was going to share some design cues with the company’s most-famous devices. But rather than emulate similar “high-end” pod systems, Teslacigs decided to veer left and released one of the smallest, yet most beautiful MTL pod systems to date.
Anyway, let’s see what Teslacigs packed into the Punk Pod…
Presenting the new Teslacigs PUNK Pod Kit, implementing a large 600mAh rechargeable battery, wattage range spanning 6.4W-9.25W, and is equipped with a 1.2mL Refillable Pod with 1.4ohm integrated SS316L Coil and organic cotton wicking. Aesthetics of the Punk Pod
Now, to be clear, if you’re not a fan of pod mods or ultra-portable devices, there’s nothing on the Punk Pod that’s going to change your mind. But if you’re an enthusiast looking for something TRULY different, the Punk Pod might be worth a look.
Okay, no matter which metallic color scheme you choose, you’re getting a standout looker in the Punk Pod. We’ve used terms like “compact” and “palm-friendly” so many times on these pages, but rarely have these terms been more appropriate. Roughly the size of a Zippo lighter, the Punk Pod could get lost in the seat of your couch if you’re not careful.
Yep, the Punk Pod measures a shade under two inches in height, and just 1.94 ounces on the scale. If the math isn’t computing, know that Teslacigs packed in a metal chain/lanyard with the Punk Pod to make sure you don’t lose it easily. It’s that small.
A Mouth to Lung Device
But that’s not a measure of performance. Aimed squarely at mouth-to-lung users (including no adjustments at all) the mod includes a 1.4-ohm coil system and a 600mAh battery that should give steady users a decent number of draws per charge.
One item of note – the chassis is built from the same stainless steel Teslacigs uses on their full-sized mods, and even with the slender frame size it’s still as rugged and durable as its big brothers. I’m pretty sure the Punk Pod could survive being run over by a semi and still churn out solid performance. We don’t recommend that, but it’s worth mentioning.
Our only real complaint? In an effort to keep things as clean as possible, letting the steampunk design steal the show, the Punk Pod is completely free of controls, screens, buttons, indicators or even an activation light. Every bit of input comes from the draw quality, which could be intimidating for newcomers.
Vaping the Teslacigs Punk Pod
Since this is STRICTLY an MTL vape device, I used nic salt liquids exclusively with the Punk Pod and was rewarded with some bright, sharp flavors and a surprising amount of throat hit. Even with a draw-activated system, there’s a noticeable punch on every inhale. Obviously, trying to direct lung draw on the Punk Pod is only going to result in pain and coughing. But when used correctly, there’s ample flavor and vapor for such a small device.
Normally, I wouldn’t prefer a draw-activated system, because it’s too far removed from how I normally vape. But here, it just seems to work seamlessly.
The pods themselves also need a shout. While 1.2mL capacities don’t generally excite me, you really couldn’t expect more from a mod this small. So, yes, you’ll probably be filling more than you would with “normal” sized pod mods, but these coils/cartridges seem pretty durable, even with heavier use.
Battery Life
Battery life is better than expected, too. Though 600mAh is hardly enough to excite me, I was pleasantly surprised by the half-day of use I got from the mod before having to recharge. Towards the end of the cycle, there was a notable loss of power in the draws, which is to be expected, but all in all, not a bad showing by the Punk Pod.
I’m not sure how they crammed a 600mAh battery into this diminutive frame, but they did, and without any excess heat, even after steady use. This was a concern we all had when first seeing the mod, and are thrilled to report that it’s not an issue with the Punk Pod.
Pros:
- GORGEOUS design and build quality
- Surprisingly potent for <10 watts of power
- Solid battery performance for 600mAh
Cons:
- No inputs, indicators or controls to speak of
- Not much versatility
- Draw activation isn’t for everyone
Bottom Line
Unlike most of the “jacks of all trades/masters of none” we review each week, there’s something refreshing about a pod mod that knows EXACTLY what it wants to be. In this case, the Teslacigs Punk Pod is strictly a low-wattage, draw-activated, simplicity-focused device aimed at smokers and anyone looking for a pocketable, no-fuss vape device.
The difference? The Punk Pod is absolutely frickin’ gorgeous and works well given the limitations of its size and design. If these specs meet your needs, then take a chance on a stunning piece of gear from one of the best in the business.
