Just when you thought touchscreen mods were going away, here comes the Joyetech Cuboid PRO box mod. Now, I don’t mean to sound negative – some of the more recent touchscreen boxes had their moments. SMOK’s G-Priv, for example, was arguably the best use of touch technology since these devices started hitting shelves.

Is Joyetech’s latest the next big touchscreen, or are they simply “out of touch?”

Joyetech Cuboid PRO Box Mod Preview - SPINFUEL VAPE MAGAZINEOther entrants into this space – SMY’s Touch Box, Laisimo’s L1, Sigelei T150, to name a few – were non-starters, failing to use the touchscreen technology as anything other than a novelty. Heck, Joyetech even had a disappointment of its own, in the form of the Ocular mods – and they had built in MP3 players!

It seems the overall consensus of touchscreen mods has been that they’re largely unnecessary, with performance that doesn’t match up to the hype, bells or whistles. But let’s credit Joyetech for sticking to their guns, and take a brief look at the Cuboid PRO box mod.

What’s new with the Joyetech Cuboid PRO?

Joyetech Cuboid PRO Box Mod Preview - SPINFUEL VAPE MAGAZINEThe Cuboid PRO comes to the table with some intriguing features. A new, allegedly tougher 2.4-inch responsive color touchscreen is obviously the focal point of the device, and Joyetech is standing firm that this 320×240 display will be less susceptible to dings and drops – which are inevitable with mods of this size.

To go along with the shiny new screen is a completely redesigned user interface, and – we assume – a new menu system to go along with it. At first glance, the display is definitely cleaner and more welcoming to vapers, with colorful, mobile phone-styled icons framing the screen, and vital information centered in an easy-to-read manner.

“ELEMENT

The information atop the screen continues the iPhone/Android-inspired design, with the user’s current mode and screen lock status populating the top left (similar to where the WiFi/cellular information would be on a phone).  Though we have yet to try it, I can’t imagine anyone with a modern phone having much trouble navigating their way around the Joyetech Cuboid PRO.

One confusing addition is the pedometer feature, used to track steps for athletes. While we certainly encourage vapers to maintain healthy lifestyles, I’m not 100% sure a large box mod is the ideal companion for a distance runner when a FitBit is likely already in their tech collections. More importantly, I hope this wasn’t included at the expense of more relevant functions and features.

What’s most interesting about the Cuboid PRO box mod at first glance is the incorporation of the company’s “Tap” technology, which gives users the option to use capacitive touchpads instead of tactile buttons. This was just introduced on the Cuboid Tap a few months back, and it appears Joyetech is “all in” with this new interface. Thankfully, for the traditionalists, there are still buttons on the Cuboid PRO – but one has to question how long they’ll remain part of Joyetech’s design plans.

What else?

In addition to the above innovations, the Cuboid PRO box mod features specs in line with today’s most popular devices. Using two 18650 batteries, the Cuboid PRO can be pushed to 200 watts, with coils as low as 0.1 ohm in wattage mode. Using the full slate of temperature control and TCR options, the device ranges from 200-600 degrees Fahrenheit, with coil resistances as low as 0.05 ohms.

Surprisingly, on a device 33mm wide, Joyetech claims the Cuboid PRO will only accommodate 25mm atomizers. I sincerely hope this is a misprint, as the mod’s size just screams for something bigger. Very curious to see how this plays out.Joyetech Cuboid PRO Box Mod Preview - SPINFUEL VAPE MAGAZINE

The Cuboid PRO box mod also has 2A onboard charging – something we’re noticing more of with each new device that crosses our desks. I’m not sure we’re ready to abandon external chargers, but it’s clear that industry leaders are finding ways to make onboard options both safer and more efficient, which is a major plus for anyone who needs a quick boost to keep them vaping through the night.

That USB 2.0 slot will also be used for firmware upgrades, using Joyetech’s proprietary software, currently available for Windows and Mac computers. There is no word if there will be a companion phone app to deepen the controls.

Also, it appears that the Joyetech Cuboid PRO will come in two versions – the solitary device, and as a starter kit packaged with the companion PROCore Aries sub-ohm tank. We’ll get more into the tank if and when the Cuboid PRO arrives as a kit, but we can safely say the Aries looks to be another addition in a growing line of top-fill, bottom-airflow tanks, with few differentiators based on the pictures alone. The PROCore Aries look is more than reminiscent of SMOK’s TFV line of Beasts, and only hope the performance matches the inspiration.

Final Thoughts on the Joyetech Cuboid PRO Box Mod

Obviously, it’s too early to pass judgment on the Cuboid PRO, but we sincerely hope this latest touchscreen contender offers usability above and beyond gimmicks like customizable wallpapers and flashy effects. Instead, we hope to see the technology used to simplify menu navigation, speed up wattage adjustment and allow for more accurate temperature control.

In short, the Cuboid PRO’s touchscreen needs to demonstrate a purpose to anyone who is perfectly content scrolling LED menus and enjoying a great vape. But only time will tell if the Joyetech Cuboid PRO box mod is the true innovator this segment of the market needs, or if it will be just another gimmicky pretender, destined for discount sales in the not-too-distant future.
