The Mighty 300W Reuleaux RX300 Box Mod
Introduction
The new WISMEC Reuleaux RX300 (300W) and the new iJoy MAXO (315W) are both large, considerably heavy, mods with a maximum wattage output of at least 300 watts. Both also sport four 18650 hi-amp cells. Is it time to ask, “When will this climb up the wattage ladder stop?”
For the past six weeks I’ve divided up my time using both these devices, as well as the 320W SMOK Marshal, and since I’ve never climbed more than half way up that wattage ladder, I’m inclined to believe that this 300-320W niche market will probably continue until all the other major mod manufacturers place a 300+ Watt device into the kitty, but it will remain a niche market. 300W mods will become as commonplace on vendor shelves as 200W mods are today, but I just can’t see these mods selling as well as the 200W mods. During this review of the Reuleaux RX300 I’ll attempt to explain why such a mod can be an extraordinary device at an extraordinary price, but remain untouchable by most vapers.
WISMEC’s Reuleaux RX300
The Reuleaux RX300 is the latest box mod to sport 4x 18650 high-amp (25a and above) batteries and outputting a maximum of 300 Watts, and it is, remarkable, stellar mod. Selling for just $59.99 at Element Vape, it’s going to be hard to ignore, and nearly impossible for many advanced vapers to resist… at first. I’ve had the Reuleaux RX300 and the new WISMEC REUX tank (made to accommodate the RX300) for weeks now and while it may be a “stellar” mod and tank, there remains a few obstacles that will not be easy to get around.
Note* The WISMEC Reuleaux RX300 is available separately, or in a Starter Kit version that includes the powerful REUX tank, made to work best with the RX300. The REUX is also available separately, and it will soon become the more popular device between the two. We will have a separate review of the REUX coming up within a matter of days, though I will touch on it in this review.
About the Reuleaux RX300 Mod
The Reuleaux RX300 is 1.65” wide, 2.28 in depth and 3.21” tall, though it looks and feels larger. The Wattage Range begins at 1W, increasing upward to 300W by .1W increments. In TC (temperature control) mode, the Temperature Range is 200°F – 600°F (100°C – 315°C) and has a Resistance Range of 0.1Ω – 3.5Ω in Variable Wattage Mode and 0.05Ω – 1.5Ω in TC Mode. In TC mode, the new RX300 chipset accommodates the usual Nickel (Ni), Titanium (Ti), and Stainless Steel (SS). In addition to improved TC accuracy, the RX300 chipset includes Manual TCR adjustments. Lastly, the RX300 has the ability to add a custom logo, and a preheat function for an instant vape.
The Reuleaux RX300 arrives on the heels of the RX200 and RX200S, with an increase in size while preserving an overall look and feel of the original grille, only giving way to a more ‘boxy’ look rather than the unique, almost triangular, shape of the 3x cell models.
Though the boxier version is larger and heavier, the visual aesthetics include soft contours along the body, making it remarkably comfortable to grip… if the weight is agreeable to the user. Carrying 4x 18650 batteries within its larger frame, the Reuleaux RX300 is going to be too heavy for many users, myself included. Kiera, all 91 pounds of her 4’ 10” frame, won’t even consider the iJoy MAXO or the Reuleaux RX300. Tom, on the other hand, couldn’t be happier with these new powerhouse mods regardless of the weight. As for me, all I’ve used them for weeks this RX300, the MAXO, and the 3x cell SMOK Marshal, (which has as much weight as the Reuleaux RX300), and I still can’t get comfortable with this much mass.
Reuleaux RX300 – The Grille
The forward-facing side of the Reuleaux RX300, the grille for the lack of a better word, has a simple, elegant design. The Jaybo signature (logo) is engraved on the large round fire button and sits at the top of the grille side, with a large rectangular OLED display following directly under the fire button, and under the display sits two adjustment buttons, side by side. Finally, the USB port is directly under the adjustment buttons. There is nothing “innovative” in this layout, though it’s as elegant as other Reuleaux models. The ‘quality’ of the fire button, the OLED display and the two adjustment buttons are superb. The OLED display is bright and easy to read, and I’ll talk more about this in a minute. Lastly, off either side of the contoured grille sits a 3-slot vent for air circulation.
Battery Compartment and More Venting
The Reuleaux RX300 sports a magnetized battery cover in the same vein as the original Reuleaux, only large enough to slip the 4x 18650 cells into. The compartment door features a latch that makes doubly sure the batteries stay in place. Venting is ample here, with two sets of three vent slots on either side of the battery cover.
The RX300 OLED Display
The OLED screen is officially the same 0.96” screen that is seen on other Reuleaux models, and it displays an intuitive organization of information, with all the essential info neatly and easily visible, including four individual battery icons to keep an eye on how the batteries are depleting, and how much power is left in each one. *Keep in mind that it is always a good idea to “marry” the batteries in any multi-battery mod, so you’ll want to use 4 identical batteries for the Reuleaux RX300, and charge them outside the mod in an external battery charger. We use only Nitecore chargers here at Spinfuel VAPE.
Other Feature Highlights of the Reuleaux RX300
The biggest new feature, for me, is being able to use the Reuleaux RX300 as a power bank to recharge a smartphone, tablet, or any other portable electronics that may need a top off. While this is a cool feature to have, anyone can purchase an external USB battery with more mAh in a much smaller and lighter body. It’s a good added feature, but it’s not some standalone power bank device.
The top of the Reuleaux RX300 features a stainless steel threaded 510-connector with a spring-loaded center pin making it easy to accept nearly any atomizer. The connector is set back far enough to accommodate atomizers up to 25mm (the width of the REUX)
The remaining top ‘property’ features a laser engraved logo and the Reuleaux RX300 branding. From a design standpoint, not an engineering one, it might have been a good idea to move the 510-connector back a bit more to accommodate even the widest of RDA’s.
Just as in other WISMEC mods, the Reverse Polarity Protection is achieved by battery’s anti-reversal circuitry in the board. This dual circuit protection system makes the RX300 a safe and reliable mod.
Reuleaux RX300 Colors – The Reuleaux RX300 comes in black or silver, as well as a carbon fiber edition in the black or silver colors. The unit I have is a silver carbon fiber. We’ll likely see many more color options in the future is the RX300 sales well enough. I would have loved to have purchased the RX300 in the same Red/Black option that’s available in the RX200S.
Performance, Satisfaction and Value of the Reuleaux RX300
Background – As I indicated above, I spent the last several weeks using the WISMEC Reuleaux RX300 with the REUX tank, the new SMOK 3x battery Marshal 320W TC Starter Kit which included the SMOK Big Baby Sub-Ohm tank, and the iJoy MAXO 4x battery mod and the iJoy Limitless Sub-Ohm tank.
Each mod/tank combination felt way too heavy for a permanent personal mod, but I stuck with them in hopes that I would get used to this scale of size and weight. I didn’t, so at the end of the review period I went back to my Lost Vape Triade DNA250, a mod I believed to be heavy when I first began using it, and now the Triade feels like a perfectly normal mod. After vaping with the Triade and realizing it no longer felt at all “weighty”, for kicks I filled the tank of the Vaporesso Attitude Starter Kit and vaped with it for a while (it’s being reviewed by another reviewer), and the Attitude felt as light as a feather. I suppose this was to be expected, though I had hoped to adapt to the weight of the four-cell mods.
Performance – I thought I knew power and cloud production after spending time with my favorite mods and tanks like the Triade with a SMOK TFV8 Cloud Beast or my SMOK Alien and the Freemax Starre PURE… little did I know. I am still very happy with these mods and tanks, however, the Reuleaux RX300 and REUX combo are in a different class of performance.
While, or because, my new condo in Nashua NH is smaller than my home in Florida, I managed to continually set off two smoke detectors with the Reuleaux RX300 every time I used it. Before the review period ended I wound up having to place a ceiling fan between the two smoke detectors and set it on high speed to stop the detectors from going off. The first time they went off, in unison, was after midnight and all I could think of was putting the neighbors in panic mode. Not a good way to introduce yourself.
This is not a frivolous matter for vapers living in apartments or condos where the smoke detectors are hardwired into the ceilings. Even removing the batteries doesn’t stop this type of smoke detector from operating (the batteries are merely backups). What I had to do to finally stop the detectors from going off was to place a tall air purifier a couple of feet from my recliner, in addition to leaving the ceiling fan on high, and restrict my use of the Reuleaux RX300 and REUX to that one spot. I’m not kidding. Funnily enough, the SMOK TFV8 series didn’t set off the detectors at all.
The WISMEC REUX – Briefly
The WISMEC REUX tank (6mL) comes with an RX triple 0.15Ω coil head and a wicked nice 0.5Ω Ceramic coil head. The RX Triple has a wattage range of 60W to 160W, and vaping with the new Spinfuel Choice Award Winning Kilo White Series Cinnamon Roll eliquid I could reach that max 160W, though my sweet spot was much less, just 95W. Even at 95W the amount of vapor that I produced was, honestly, shocking. Keep in mind that the REUX tank was not dependent on the RX300 to produce those 95W and achieve enormous vapor, anyone could use the REUX on any mod capable of 100W or more, provided the mod could handle the 25mm width of the tank, otherwise a bit of hangover could spoil the aesthetic.
I’ve used more than a hundred sub-ohm tanks in 2016 alone, and more than 30 RDA, RDTA’s during the same period, and the REUX outperformed every tank in vapor production. I’ll leave the rest of my review, including the REUX flavor fidelity, for its formal review, but the point is, the Reuleaux RX300 and the REUX are a combination that, as of today, cannot be beat when it comes to raw vapor clouds.
Satisfaction – When it comes to “Satisfaction” I need to present it in two distinct ways. As a box mod, I love the design, the carbon fiber, the OLED display, and all the high-end features. However, the box mod is a tad too heavy. I am completely satisfied with the performance, whether using the REUX or any of the several other sub-ohm tanks, but I’m a bit dissatisfied with the overall weight and size.
Value – As for “Value”, that’s a no brainer. This state-of-the-art box mod, running the latest RX-300 chipset, with carbon fiber materials, is just $53.99. That is surprisingly low for such a device, and the REUX tank runs an inexpensive $39.95 (considering the tank’s specs and what comes with it), the value is outstanding.
Bottom Line
The Reuleaux RX300 is not a mod for beginner’s, or anyone who may not enjoy dealing with a lot of extra weight. In addition, this is a mod that needs four married 18650 25a batteries, and a spare set to boot. I can’t think of anyone that needs 300 watts of power, so in my opinion the RX300 is overkill. That said, this mod is very well made, has tons of features and the specs are outstanding. And in pinch, a user can recharge a phone or tablet, providing they have the proper USB cable and the optional RC adapter (see photo).
I can sum it up this way; if you are a fan of the Reuleaux series, and if you want 300W of power and do not mind the extra weight, and have no problem with owning two sets of four married batteries, then by all means, head over to Vapor Authority and buy one right now.
***I have to confess that when the first 200W mods began to be released I was of the opinion that 200W was overkill. So, what do I know?
Final Grade: A
“This is an advanced box mod with an extreme amount of wattage output. Unless you are an experienced vaper, the Reuleaux RX300 is not the best mod for you.”
