VaporFi Atom Dry Herb Vaporizer
Dry Herb Vaporizers are on the rise thanks to the legalization of Marijuana in several states (including California where currently reside). I don’t smoke (or vaporize) marijuana except recreationally on rare occasions so I reached out to a close friend (thank you Josh Fink) of mine to lend a hand. I’ve known him almost 15 years and trust his opinion like they were my own. Considering some of VaporFi’s competitors are selling their versions of a Dry Herb device for double the price, the VaporFi Atom is an excellent choice for more budget friendly herbal connoisseurs. Just because the price is less doesn’t mean the quality and craftsmanship slacks far behind others in this space. The Atom Dry Herb Vaporizer ($139.99 at VaporFi) is coined the flagship Dry Herb device for VaporFi which not only is compact and sleek but also performs flawlessly. The body has a brushed Black finish (is only available in the Black configuration) with rounded off corners that passes my test for a stealthy setup. There’s not much to admire other than a fire button, mouthpiece, the ceramic oven underneath and the centrally located LED lighting panel. The Atom is lightweight, feels awesome in any sized hand and radiates that premium quality we expect when spending over a hundred bucks. VaporFi spent more time dialing in the internals and functionality rather than designing something for looks. Judging a book by its cover is a bad idea when it comes to the Atom Dry Herb Vaporizer!
The simplistic aesthetic aside, the performance is fantastic! The Atom is VaporFi’s most powerful vaporizer to date equipped with three different temperature settings and a single-click activation system. The chipset outputs up to 15W (non-adjustable) and uses an LED system prominently displayed in the center of the frame. Different color LED lights shine to show you the current temperature setting and battery level. When adjusting temperatures, Blue represents 360°F, Yellow 410°F and Red 464°F. On the hottest setting, the chassis will heat up a bit but never gets too hot to the touch. The chipset is highly advanced and allows for some amazing features in such a portable compact device. It’s very pocket-friendly and feels like a Mechanical Mod without all the extra weight.
The ceramic heating chamber is located on the bottom of the device where you insert your Dry Herb (roughly a gram). The bottom cap (or oven door) can be removed by pushing one side which teeters the other side up. The chamber door is held in place with a couple magnets and I didn’t have any issues with the door falling off. The position of the ceramic chamber allows air to run openly up the Stainless-Steel air path resulting in smooth and clean vapor. A screen is located just below the chamber that helps filter any excess debris and prevents anything from reaching your mouth. The screens will need to be replaced and are available as a 3-pack at VaporFi.com. The two cleaning pipes included in the box allows for cleaning out the air path once it begins accumulating residue (5-packs also at VaporFi.com). After throwing close to a half ounce of Cannabis at the Atom, the need to clean it as well as routine maintenance has been minimal.
The VaporFi Atom Dry Herb Vaporizer utilizes a built-in 3000mAh internal battery. The Motion Sensing Technology (like the PAX 3) allows you to physically shake the Atom to check your battery level. The LED lights display Green when the battery is full, Yellow when partially drained and Red when it’s time to charge. It also features a Life Preservation Mode which turns itself into standby mode after 30 seconds of not using it, extending the life of your battery. While in Preservation Mode, the chamber drops in temperature slightly but allows for you to pick it up and vape even after sitting idle for up to 2 minutes. The battery life is very impressive as I found myself charging the Atom roughly every two days. To charge it, simply plug in the micro USB cord (that comes included) into the USB port and off you go. Unfortunately, there’s no pass-through feature so you’ll need to wait around 3 hours until the Atom is charged back up to vape. Plenty of safety features were implemented such as Over-Voltage and Overload Protection to keep your vaporizing sessions safe and long-lasting.
The fire button located on the side of the Atom has a slight click to it and protrudes plenty from the side for easy finding. Once you press the fire button one time (the LED lights display Purple) which initiates the oven to begin heating up. You don’t need to press the fire button again unless you want to change your temperature (takes 2-clicks). When the lights turn White, you can begin taking pulls without the need to press the fire button again. From room temperature to the middle setting (410°F) takes around 40-50 seconds so not a pick up and fire type of situation. The Atom is more geared toward the session vaper versus the one hit and set it aside variant. After a couple draws, you will want to stir your material or the consistency will be very sporadic. Luckily there is a stir stick that’s included in the box that makes this process easy to do. The amount of vapor is very minimal even on the hottest setting. Keep in mind that the hotter the temperature the faster the material will burn. At the hottest setting, take strong but less drawn out drags or you’ll get a burnt throat hit.
A huge positive about the VaporFi Atom Dry Herb Vaporizer is the vapor produced is nearly odorless. This could vary heavily depending on the potency and herbs you are consuming but you won’t be noticed in a crowd if that makes sense. The mouthpiece is made from 100% food grade material that’s non-toxic and is pressure-fitted to the top of the body. It’s comfortable to vape on besides the fact it likes to fall off the device very easily. This was one of the only negatives that I came across with the Atom. It’s not hard to re-insert but is annoying to constantly mess with it and get it to stay on and positioned correctly. It was most noticeable when it was in my pocket. Almost every time I reached to grab it, the mouthpiece was floating around rather than staying attached as it should. This isn’t a deal breaker for me whatsoever just an annoying hindrance I was constantly dealing with. Other than that, the drip tip doesn’t get even remotely hot when vaping at the highest temperature setting and is very comfy to vape on for long sessions.
Final Grade – B+
“The ease of use and simplistic operation allows you to spend more time kicking your feet up and enjoying a vape. If VaporFi could figure out a better system for the mouthpiece the Atom would receive a better grade. The Atom gave me plenty of great vaping sessions at around half the price ($139.99 at VaporFi) of its competitors; I would highly recommend it without a doubt!”
