It’s weird to write this, but we might have reached a point where “throwback” pod mod/AIO devices are hitting the market. While there’s nothing “JUUL-like” about the all-new OneVape Mace 55 kit, OneVape opted for a simpler AIO approach than many competitors are taking these days. Instead of wattage displays and even temp control options, the Mace 55 keeps things simple… and for the most part, powerful.

Aesthetics of the OneVape Mace 55 Pod Mod AIO

One thing’s for sure, OneVape knows how to make an attractive vape mod. Not only is this weighty, durable aluminum mod well built, but it also carries on the company’s tradition for mature styling. My silver test model is lacking any colorful art, resin or even patterns. It’s just simple, bare metal that forgoes design for function.

There ARE plenty of color options to choose from, including an especially attractive gunmetal/scarlet variety that caught my eye. Is the Mace 55 as attractive as its main competitors? That depends on your preference for form factors, but OneVape is definitely not making cheap plastic junk for street users.

Simple Functions are in Again

COLORS - ONE VAPE MACE 55 POD KITLooking past the design, the Mace 55 features simple functionality. A one-button operation mechanism, capacious pod cartridges, and proprietary coil system all come together in a compact format, making the Mace 55 a pod mod worth considering for less-finicky buyers.

Three Light LED

But the three-light LED power and warning indicator is losing steam as a viable way to control a vape mod. When a pod mod is <20 watts, there’s relatively little concern. But the Mace 55 regularly pumps upwards of 50 watts, making it risky to trust a vague voltage meter for accurate power readings.

More importantly, what does an LED indicator tell new users about their setups? Is a flashing light going to be enough to properly convey potential dangers? It’s not likely, so let’s consider a change. Maybe we’re not the biggest fans of pod mods, but recent shifts toward more-advanced vape devices are simply better for educating newcomers.

Vaping the OneVape Mace 55 Kit

No matter how modern pod mod developers want you to believe otherwise, pod/AIO devices are NOT designed for direct lung vaping. Yes, you can technically do it, but you can also swap out donuts for hamburger buns – chances are it’s not going to work as well as you want it to.

With Exception of course. We’re beginning to see a new breed of AIO/Pod systems that deliver full Direct Lung usage. That said, even devices like the SMOK RPM80, a review I’m writing now. Full airflow control within the pod/coil allows for some serious clouds. Flavor is not quite there yet, but progress is being made constantly.

Mace 55 is Multipurpose with Meaning

The Mace 55 is being pushed as another multipurpose AIO device, with a pair of TINY plug-n-play retro coils in the box. This includes an 0.3-ohm coil to handle direct lung use and a tighter 0.6-ohm head for more restricted vaping.

COILS - ONE VAPE MACE 55 POD KITMTL & DL

While the 0.3-ohm mesh head is definitely a less-restrictive draw, there isn’t any appreciable improvement in flavor, vapor or performance. Plus, this head lasted roughly half as long as the MTL coil, and used considerably less of the 1,500mAh battery each session. The lack of longevity struck me the most, especially when you consider how durable some classic coils used to be.

The 0.6-ohm MTL head fared better in both the flavor and longevity departments and should be the preferred coil for new users. Though you can technically use a wide range of liquids with the Mace 55 kit, my nicotine salt juices performed best using this configuration – much better than my standard liquids managed with the sub-ohm offering.

Mace 55 Removable Pods

The removable pod section of the Mace 55 was a little tricky, with a loose-but-reliable magnet array that most pods in this category use. I had a little trouble keeping it in place when removing it from my front pocket, but it was hardly tragic.

Pods - ONE VAPE MACE 55 POD KITI enjoyed the tapered mouthpiece, thanks to the warm vapor it provided. It sat comfortably on the lips and delivered enough concentrated flavor to make this a worthwhile experience. Those of you looking for “room-filling” vapor will likely be let down with the narrow chimney, but experienced pod vapers will feel right at home.

Refillable and Fast – It’s Needed

I should also mention that you’ll be filling the Mace 55 quite a bit, since its coils are about as thirsty and short-lived as I’ve seen since the AIO explosion began a while back. This made me ask the same question I posed then — if a pod mod is designed for sub-ohm use AND blows through e-liquid at a rapid clip, is there really any advantage to these types of devices?

Battery life is about what you’d expect from a 1,500mAh integrated cell. (Which means, it’s nowhere long enough) It lasts longer with MTL use, but neither method is going to give you much long-term performance. (I’m talking maybe 90 minutes) It sits right at the tipping point between “average” and “shitty“. Keep in mind that a simple 18650 battery can store up to 3100-mAh without worry. So, 1500-mAh is on the ridiculous side.

Pros:

– Strong MTL performance

– Solid, unadorned exterior

– Durable and comfortable

Cons:

– Weak sub-ohm performance

– Below Average battery life

– Massive e-juice consumption

The OneVape Mace Bottom Line

mod and tank -ONE VAPE MACE 55 POD KIT

OneVape usually makes awesome vape mods. And the Mace 55 certainly isn’t bad, either. But, in 2020, I simply can’t figure out a need for a device with a three-light display and questionable coil performance. Though the Mace 55 is a solid MTL performer with some sub-ohm capabilities, there are better products out there to meet both of these needs.
