Famovape Magma Box Mod Review – If resin vape mods never went away, how can they be making a comeback? We may never have an answer, but if the recent glut of them on my desk are any indication, it’s a welcome trend. A few months back, we had the awesome iJOY Shogun UNIV device, and now its spiritual little cousin is here, the Famovape Magma Box Mod.

While there’s no direct lineage between the devices, it’s clear this look and feel is back in a huge way. But while the Shogun was a little more sizable (and a touch less powerful) the Magma takes the same idea and puts it in a more compact package. The results? Well, the Magma isn’t QUITE as fantastic as the Shogun, but it’s damn close, and I’m thrilled to have it in my mod rotation.

FAMOVAPE MAGMA 200W TC BOX MOD

Let’s see what our friends at Element Vape have to say about the Magma.

The Famovape MAGMA 200W Box Mod is an innovative product, integrating a dual battery layout, extensive temperature control suite, and crafted from premium materials for a quality mod with class. The MAGMA Box measures in at 87mm tall and is formed from a durable zinc alloy and resin materials. Behind a magnetic resin battery door, dual-18650 batteries power the device, allowing for resistances as low as 0.08ohms and wattages up to 200W.

With those parameters, temperature control is extensive and is possible with the nickel, titanium, and stainless steel wire compatibility. Operated by an intuitive firing button and two adjustment buttons, the vape data is relayed back to the user via 0.96″ TFT Color Display Screen to allow for minute adjustments to create the perfect vape settings for any user.

Impressions

I won’t lie, when I first saw the Magma, I was underwhelmed, simply because we’ve seen so many of these types of mods lately. But once I started using it, I realize that – just like the Shogun – the Magma is designed for simple, no-nonsense functionality, without any bells or whistles to get in the way. And my appreciation quickly grew.

Famovape Magma Box Mod ReviewThat’s not to say the Magma isn’t gorgeous – it is. The permanent resin side panels are extremely smooth, and – other than a few fingerprints – really accent the mod without being garish or overblown. I wish I could swap them out, but I’m happy with the reserved design on my blue/purple test model. And unlike last year’s massive Famovape Bitbox, which qualified as a weapon in 31 states, the company made sure to keep the Magma streamlined.

The color TFT display is worth mentioning. While the menu system follows the tried-and-true “three-click” approach, the bright, crisp screen makes it effortless, even for newcomers to advanced vaping devices. Nothing too crazy, just clean, attractive visuals to improve the user experience.

The buttons and fire key follow the overall “no-frills” aesthetic, with solid, well-designed inputs that are responsive and clicky. My only concern is the 510 connection, which is screwed in, but has as much play and wiggle as cheaper press-fit offerings. Once my tanks were attached, there wasn’t much movement, but attaching and removing them saw more wiggle than I’m comfortable with in 2019.

Standout Features

On a mod so focused on simplicity, there really isn’t much in the way of “standout” features. That said, I have to credit Famovape for two things. First, despite its diminutive size, the Magma hits a legitimate 200 watts, smoothly and accurately, with zero missteps on the way up the ladder. I never once misfired or got any random pulses or spikes. It just works.

Secondly, despite all this power in such a small space, the Magma DOESN’T live up to its name, staying cool and battery efficient, even under heavy use. I’ve put this thing through the rigors over the last few weeks, and it just keeps delivering, without getting warm or stuttering. A pair of freshly charged 18650s keep the Magma flowing through most of a regular workday, and should perform even better outside of testing conditions.

What can I say that hasn’t already been covered? At this point in my vape review career, I’ve seen it all – touchscreens, voice control, oversized displays, computer software adjustments, photo storage, WiFi capability… you get the point. But you know what mods I keep coming back to? The ones that just effing work without needing special controls or advanced degrees. And the Magma falls right in that territory.

Pop in two batteries, attach an atomizer, and just vape already. Not only does the Magma’s size make it a great device to have in your pocket, but it also offers tremendous longevity between charges, with onboard charging for when power get a little lean.

Plus, with the nice, stiff input buttons, you don’t need to worry about unintentional 200-watt hits or random setting changes. That said, the standard temperature control and TCR modes are here, easily accessible and pinpoint-accurate, with no random fluctuations along the way. I may not vape that way very often, but it’s nice to know the Magma makes it easy to operate when I do.

All of my testing tanks and RDAs worked beautifully on the Magma, with no random fluctuations or problems. Straightforward, no-nonsense vaping at its finest, even with the swirly resin side panels. Even at lower wattages, where many high-powered vape mods stutter, the Magma fires confidently and accurately.

Pros

– Simple, proven design

– Excellent chipset and power efficiency

– Compact and pocket-friendly

Cons

– Side panels aren’t interchangeable

– Wobbly 510 connector plate

– Atomizers over 26mm will hang over the slender width

Spinfuel VAPE Recommendation and Score

Other than a few sticking points with the 510 connection, there’s really not much to criticize here. Famovape may not be a common name in vape mods, but they’re starting to move in the right direction. Because for the size (and price) the Magma is a tremendous performer. It all comes down to what type of experience you want – if you’re like me and want something simple and effective, this mod needs to be a strong consideration.
