Smoking and Vaping: A 2012 Editorial, with Current Context

By John Manzione • September 5, 2012

Text Size

Archive note — September 2026: This 2012 editorial captures a formative argument about the difference between combustible cigarettes and vaping. Its claims about nicotine, youth access, health effects, and regulation are historical opinion, not current guidance. The CDC says no tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is safe; nicotine is highly addictive; and e-cigarettes should not be used by youth, young adults, or during pregnancy. Adults who smoke may have potential benefit only when e-cigarettes completely substitute for smoked tobacco. See the CDC’s current health-effects guidance.
