Remember when pod mods and traditional vape mod setups were different things? It wasn’t that long ago that pod mods were strictly focused on new vapers, ex-smokers and nicotine seekers. But thanks to this recent surge of “box pod” systems like the new Horizon Magico kit, those lines are blurred beyond belief.

Let’s take a look at the latest entry in this burgeoning section of the vaping marketplace. While the Magico isn’t rewriting the books on vaping, or even pod mods, it’s definitely the strongest “box pod” since Lost Vape debuted the Orion last year. Let’s see why, starting with the specs.

The “Official” Pod Description

The MAGICO Pod 25W Starter Kit is a fusion of functionality and beauty, capturing the latter in the intricate resinous designs. Within the sleek chassis resides a large capacious 1370mAh rechargeable battery, ideal for lasting through longer extended vaping sessions with ease.

Impressions/Aesthetics

I’m not sure why all of these box pod manufacturers feel the need to adorn the sides with resin panels, but Horizon definitely followed the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” aesthetic with the Magico. Though it’s a little thicker and heavier than devices like the Orion, or the SMOK Trinity Alpha, (review here) there isn’t much different about the Magico… at least at first sight.

When you dive in deeper, though, you’ll see some nifty improvements to this proven format – most notably, the massive 6.5mL tank/pod section, which is necessary due to the Magico’s sub-ohm vaping capabilities with the 0.2-ohm mesh coil. But if you’re an MTL vaper and use the 1.8-ohm coil (also included) then that 6.5mL capacity becomes the fuel for all-day vaping.

Because of the multi-purpose setup, the Magico features a wider drip tip than usual for these types of devices. I found it to be a little too much to handle with higher-nic e-liquids, but overall it was comfortable and cool, no matter which coil was installed.

Standout Features

Here’s a first for Spinfuel VAPE – the highlight of the Magico pod kit is a hole. A giant, wonderful hole. A hole that allows users to fill the capacious pod section without an ounce of spillage or overflow, thanks to droppers not fitting. Even with other pod mod devices that claim to have sub-ohm capabilities, filling the pods with appropriate liquid usually proves to be an absolute nightmare.

With the Horizon Magico Pod Mod System, I was able to fill the pod with any liquid I wanted, not wasting any juice along the way… or paper towels, for that matter.

I suppose I could also mention the 1,370mAh battery as a highlight, but frankly, I thought it underperformed for its stated capacity (even it it’s still way more battery than most pod mods have under the hood).

Vaping the Magico Pod Mod

This is where things were both frustrating and surprising. Because for the first time ever, a pod mod was better suited for direct lung/sub-ohm vaping than mouth-to-lung! Don’t get me wrong, both uses were great, but the wide drip tip and long-lasting battery actually made the sub-ohm performance seem more impressive.

In MTL mode, the snug 1.8-ohm coil worked as intended – and lasted a few weeks to boot! But it was nothing we haven’t seen before in this style of vaping products. However, the direct lung mesh coil was dynamite, with rich, concentrated flavor, thick plumes of vapor and surprising longevity for coils of this resistance.

I managed to get several weeks of quality vaping from both coil heads, with no signs of scorched or muted flavors – not many pod devices can say that.

Spinfuel VAPE Recommendation and Score

The Magico really surprised me with its versatility and how it caters to a wider audience. Other pod devices have tried to bring sub-ohm vapers into the party, but few have succeeded quite like HorizonTech’s design team. Maybe the world isn’t quite ready for a device that truly “does it all,” the Magico is definitely a pod mod that sub-ohm vapers can feel comfortable putting into the rotation.
