A lot of all-in-one (AIO) kits have been making their way to our desks this year, as the industry seems to be embracing simplicity for all – not just ex-smokers and new vapers. The SMOK M17 pen-style kit is the latest entry to come our way, and – other than a few sticking points – seems like it could be a winner.

Measuring just 17.5mm in diameter, the SMOK Stick M17 is clearly aimed at vapers who don’t want to make a statement with their vape devices. Nor do they want complicated controls and expansive feature lists, since the M17 is a solely single-button affair. This is for simplified, no-nonsense vape enjoyment.

Now, that’s not to say it’s sub-par technology inside that slender tube. Using an intelligent direct voltage output format, the 1,300mAh Stick M17 aims to accurately read battery life and coil resistance, to deliver a precise amount of power for an optimal sub-ohm vape.

More About the SMOK M17 Pen-Style Kit

Yes, that’s right – the Stick M17 is very much a sub-ohm-focused device. Now, we’re not expecting this to outperform high-wattage mods or mech setups. But it’s clear (by the coils and wide-bore drip tip) that more and more “beginner” vapers are intrigued by the powerful experiences offered by complex devices, and the SMOK Stick M17 seems to bridge the gap between MTL pen-styles and all-out sub-ohm monsters.

Despite the simplified power distribution, the bright flashing LED indicator tells users warnings of battery life, atomizer connection, low resistance and more. Protections are built in, and designed to keep users vaping, not making adjustments throughout the day.

Is the system as intuitive and helpful as a small screen might be? Likely not, but we’re willing to give SMOK a chance to prove its simplistic setup is still easy to use.

Also included in the kit is an all-new (and seemingly unnamed) SMOK atomizer coils, which are specifically designed for direct voltage output vaping. We’re curious to see if (and how) this integrated 2mL tank setup performs as compared to a traditional tank arrangement. We would also like to know if some of SMOK’s other pen-style coils are compatible with the M17.

Honestly, all seems solid about the Stick M17 pen-style system… except for one glaring concern – the 1,300mAh battery, which would have seemed low for an eGo setup four years ago, much less a brand new AIO kit in 2017. Though battery technology has improved dramatically over these past few years, 1,300 mAh is alarmingly low – especially on a mod aimed at appeasing a wide range of vapers.

One nice touch is that the M17 pen-style kit is capable of pass-through use, which should help alleviate some concerns about the battery capacity.

We’ll be putting the SMOK Stick M17 through its paces over the next few weeks, and will have answers to these – and countless other – questions soon. Check back soon!
