The SMOK RPM 40 Review – I’ll admit when I first opened this month’s box of goodies to review I was a bit dizzy looking at the amount of POD MODS packed inside. That’s until I pulled the SMOK RPM 40 (40W )Pod Mod out of the mix. Now I’m not saying: “Why are you wasting your time and not treating yourself to this already!” Because, we here at Spinfuel work hard for you-our readers– testing each device with our critical eye for detail, and passion for vaping. So, let’s dive into the details as there are some quirks that need to be addressed first.
WARNING
Oh, and just to make it clear, everything we review should NEVER be used in conjunction with illegal THC products or anything at all made with Vitamin E acetate. For the love of God, please make sure what you are vaping is made by reputable companies that put safety first. Not some side-of-road, home-brewed crap that is currently costing every single Vaper, vape shop owner and vape shop employee their job or lives. Honest Vaping is the one thing that has successfully removed smokers from the awful world of tobacco. Let’s not blow it.
This includes buying ANYTHING on eBay that would be used in a tank, cartridge, or other container. Vaping legal liquid in a legal vape mod is safe, 95% less harmful than cigarettes (personally, I’ve been vaping for 9 years and I believe it’s 100% safer than smoking cigarettes.). Be smart, don’t use or let your friends use ‘suspect’ products that could cause harm.
Anyway, on with the SMOK RPM 40 Pod System.
IMPRESSIONS AND AESTHETICS of the SMOK RPM 40
The pod mod market has seen a huge inundation of new devices over the last year. Similar to what RDA’s faced a few years ago. In due time everything begins to look like a “copy of a copy.” With little more than a brand name separating one device from the next. Fortunately, that’s not the case with the SMOK RPM 40W. With Its cuboid like design certainly separating this one from the pack.
The RPM 40 is a refreshing departure within the pod mod style of vapes. The mods chassis is constructed from a sturdy Zinc-Alloy able to withstand daily use. The faceted edges of the mod and tapered mouthpiece both look and feel good. Not without mentioning the TFT display panel is a huge improvement for interface design within pod mod devices. The overall fit and finish is top notch.

POD OPTIONS FOR THE RPM 40
The RPM40 comes with not just one, but two separate pod options. Including the RPM & Nord Pod Options – Compatible with RPM or Nord Coils, respectively. Not included with the starter kit for this review – but coming soon- is an additional RPM RBA for those looking to build their own pod coils rather than buying them.
POD OPTIONS CONT…
As far as performance goes the 0.4ohm RPM MESH coil provided a slightly warmer vape with bigger clouds over the nord pods as expected. However it’s difficult to say that one produced better flavor over the other, as they both left me satisfied regardless of which one I was using. The Nord coils do produce a cooler vape along with a more restricted lung hit over the 0.4ohm mesh pods.
Additionally both the RPM and NORD PODs are secured inside the mod via magnetic connection. There is both a pro and a con to the way these attach. On a positive note the pods make a secure connection within the housing of the mod. Never once did I experience the pod accidentally separating from the mod. Even while pulling the device out of my pocket, I didn’t experience that awkward moment where I had a pod with no mod.
The trade off here is that the pods are so well secured in the housing of the mod that the only way to check how much e-liquid you have left is by removing the pod from the device. A little viewport window could be a great addition to any future versions of this device.
Both the RPM & NORD PODS hold over 4mlLs of liquid that translate into more vaping and less filling. Thats always a big win in my check list. However, when I did need to refill I had easily the most frustrating experience to date. The side fill port has the tiniest hole! I had to bust out an old school syringe just to get liquid in the damn thing. No standard dropper or unicorn bottle would easily work to fill these pods.
Furthermore, if you try forcing liquid in with a unicorn-style bottle like I did, the vacuum within the pod will push liquid out through the coil and drip tip causing a mess. So SMOK if your listening, please change this design! Make a larger dual fill port so to avoid this mess and really make this an A+ package.
TFT DISPLAY ON THE RPM 40
Turning the device on for the first time and watching the start up almost had me sold right there. After using a slue of pod mods with the stripped down light up LED menus like the SIGELEI E-tiny plus and VANDY VAPE Apollo. Staring down at this gorgeous 0.96” TFT display elevated the RPM40 waves above the competition. Granted there’s not a huge range of menu options to choose from beside adjusting your wattage, puff counter etc. There are some handy functions built in that are typically seen only on larger box mods. Like locking your fire button and selected wattage range, both super helpful from avoiding misfiring the device or accidentally scorching the coil.
STANDOUT FEATURES of the SMOK RPM 40
The QR chipset controlling the RPM 40 is certainly one of the best performing I’ve come across while reviewing pod mods. I’d go as far to say that it’s almost neck and neck with the SNOW WOLF WOCKET as far as ramp up time is concerned.
The integrated 1500mAh battery is a “2 hour quick-charge” via micro usb port on the base. I was able to get a solid day of vaping the 0.4ohm mesh coils at 25w over the course of the day. With even better battery life while using the 0.6ohm nord coils at only 15w.
PROS:
– PODS hold 4+ml’s of e-liquid
– 1500mHa 2hr quick charge integrated battery
– Great performance from both RPM & NORD coils
CONS:
– Tiny fill port on pods
– Silicone Side stopper are tough to press in
– No way to view e-liquid without removing the pods completely
The SMOK RPM 40 Pod Mod System Summary
The SMOK RPM 40 certainly has earned its place amongst some of the best pod mod systems currently available. The the integrated1500mAh rechargeable make the RPM40 one of the most powerful pod mods out there. Combined with the options of using either the new RPM Mesh or the NORD COILS really make for a versatile and capable device. Only slightly missing the mark with the difficult to fill pods. Luckily the 4+ ml capacity means less filling compared to the typical 2ml of most devices in this category. Last but not least the brilliant TFT display makes wattage and setting adjustments breeze. Setting the RPM 40 into a class of its own.
