Best Overall Vapes – Mods and Kits for 2019…so far

A new favorite around our offices (read: we all keep stealing them from other editors’ desks) the all-new Valyrian II Starter Kit (comes with the terrific Valyrian II 2 Sub-Ohm tank) is well-constructed, powerful, and designed with not only style in mind, but comfort as well. We all enjoyed holding it, vaping it, and loving the 300-watt overhead… even if none of us ever vape that high. But it doesn’t matter – the Valyrian II kit is an exercise in excess, and Uwell did an excellent job creating a elaborate vape mod that can satisfy anyone who still enjoys huge clouds and spectacular flavor.

Did we mention POWER? We have to admit that 300W is a bit ridiculous, considering none of the companion tank coils don’t go anywhere near that total. But that’s the beauty of this pomp and circumstance – this is a mod for all vapers. In other words, if you need or want 300W, the Valyrian II vape mod will do the job in grand fashion.

We’re loving this new addition to the rotation (and probably could use a few more of them sent to the office). The mod feels great, the tank offers marvelous flavor, lots of clouds, and a nice selection of coils. As a starter kit, meaning a kit where the user uses the included tank, there aren’t many kits that offer more features and value than this one.

At the time I wrote the review, I said “…the bold, authoritative Asmodus Amighty is my new favorite mod of 2019.” And though it might not still be sitting atop my personal Everest, the Amighty still has a very comfortable position at basecamp… an elevation few mods will ever reach.

Strong… commanding… tough. These are all good adjectives for the single 21700-compatible Amighty – a mod that somehow stands taller than most mods, is wide enough to handle 30mm atomizers without overhang, and yet never feels uncomfortable or unwieldy. Hell, you might even be fooled into thinking this is a much higher wattage device… but once you try it, you’ll realize you really don’t need much more power than this.

We also need to mention the overall kit value. Most vape kits feature companion tanks that fizzle. But the Amighty kit’s 27mm Viento sub-ohm tank rises above this mediocre reputation to deliver top-tier flavor and vapor performance, while also working effortlessly to provide it. It’s a burly-looking tank that performs great with the included coils, and even better with fully compatible SMOK TFV12 coils.

This is a commanding device that draws attention wherever it goes – not just for looks, but also for flawless performance throughout.

I feel like we’ve had a roller coaster ride with Voopoo Drag devices, but the company has certainly made up for some early missteps with one of the prettiest high-power mods we’ve seen.  The Voopoo Drag 2 has the company’s typically stellar levels of quality and precision, meaning no odd threading, quirky buttons, strange machining or improper fits, no matter which 18650 batteries or vape tanks you use. It’s just an example of pristine quality.

Like with its predecessors, Voopoo continues to get one thing very right with the Drag 2 – the vaunted GENE chipset (in this case, the GENE Fit) — which makes the mod’s 177 watts sing like a choir. Not only has this chipset powered most of the company’s premier mods, but it also remains one of the fastest-ramping, smoothest performing boards on the market. With a near-instant firing speed, and immediate detection of all atomizer types, there’s nothing you have in your collection that will cause the Drag 2 to stumble.

Also, we need to mention the Uforce T2 sub-ohm tank, which is included in the kit, accompanied by the U2 single coil and N3 triple mesh coils. This compact but strong-performing tank would be a solid purchase on its own, and needs to be considered one of the best companion tanks in any kit released in a long time.

I usually work anonymously, but I’m going to make an exception – my name is Brad, and I’m the cranky one [Ed – CrankiER, anyway] around here, looking for flaws and nitpicks, even when there aren’t many. But it’s nice to have a break from all the negativity – a break I enjoyed when testing the SMOK Morph mod kit. Because I feel the SMOK Morph IS a must-have device for fans of the brand, if not all Vapers. (and we hate saying ‘must-have’, except in extreme cases)

The touchscreen-enabled Morph kit shows true progress for SMOK by taking a wealth of ideas the company tried before and making them all better. It’s not subtle, it’s not a “throwback” and it’s not streamlined. But it is the best representation of their mod lineage since they launched the stalwart Alien all those years ago, and it’s one of the best device/tank combos available today. Just think; Smok’s previous endeavor was the “Species“, it was released just weeks prior, and does anyone even think about it now?

We need to remind everyone who thinks vape device boards begin and end with “DNA” that the IQ-S chipset is a winner. Not because it suddenly brings DNA-like levels of customization to the table, but rather because it takes the standard SMOK method of operations and makes them smoother, stronger and more reliable than before. In other words, it takes an existing quality and makes it even better.

Like most of our office, I love the SMOK Morph. It might not be my sole, “go to” mod. It might not be the most attractive device in my collection. Hell, it might be eclipsed by SMOK’s next device coming down the line. But for the time being, there are no other products in the company’s line that deliver the complete package of power, ease of use and customization. And truth be told, not many mods in my collection do, either.

Sometimes, a vape mod just fits its owner. I know that seems silly to say, but as a guy who gets new devices to try each week, and still regularly uses much older mods, it makes sense. That’s exactly what happened when the awesome Vandy Vape Jackaroo arrived on my desk, and still hasn’t left my rotation months later.

Hell, I only had it a week before deeming it one of the best vape mods of 2019 in our last roundup – pretty high esteem that early in the year. But the Jackaroo mod is one of the biggest surprises of 2019. Because most of us haven’t had much luck with single 2X700 mods in the past, much less those that claim to be water- and dust-resistant. But Vandy Vape hit on all cylinders with the Jackaroo, and we’ve loved every minute.

I can’t discuss the Jackaroo’s standout features without mentioning the battery life. How good is it? A single, fully charged 21700 cell gave me nearly six hours of steady vaping at or near its 100-watt limit. Like I said in our “best mods” roundup, this is practically unprecedented for a single-cell mod of any caliber, much less a device designed for sub-ohm vaping.

From the comfort to the construction, to its outstanding battery performance, and even the above-average sub-ohm tank, this is a tremendous vape kit that will appeal to sub-ohm newcomers or those seeking a tough-as-nails mod for their collections.

For those who don’t know this mod, shame on you. Well, okay… that was a little much. But know that there’s a reason we fell for this mod the instant it arrived on our desks. Built on an updated OMNI Board 4.0 chipset and featuring a two-inch display alongside the companion SKRR-S Sub-Ohm tank, the Vaporesso Luxe ZV might be one of the most intelligent, classy mods to date.

Like Vaporesso’s other devices, the Luxe ZV has near-instant firing speeds and vibration-enabled touch technology for immediate feedback.

Plus, the Vaporesso SKRR-S tank was a really nice throw-in for an already-awesome device. We reviewed it several times in Spinfuel VAPE and enjoyed the flavor and vapor output from this marvelous atomizer.

By the way, while all the anti-vape crowd out there is hammering companies on building vape devices that appeal to kids, every edition of the Vaporesso LUXE is elegant, sophisticated and definitely does not appeal to kids. More vape makers should follow suit.

Months later, this lightweight beast still surprises us. When I first unboxed the Think Vape Thor Pro 200-watt box mod, all of us immediately assumed it was just another lightweight, cost-cutting mod designed to be more stylish than satisfying. But we were wrong… so wonderfully wrong.

And, just like in my original A+ review, I still don’t need 1,500 words to tell the story. I could have dissected every function and feature on the Think Vape Thor Pro mod, but so can an instruction manual. My job is to let you know in plain language if a device is worth buying and owning. And my answer here is unequivocally “yes.”

At this price, it’s hard to fathom how much value Think Vape is delivering with this chipset, but we’re happy they found a way to bring a higher-end experience to this category of mods. The few quirks we highlighted barely mattered once we put the Thor Pro through its paces. An absolute surprise, and a joy to use, the Thor Pro gets our highest recommendation.

Straight-ahead, power-focused performance – THAT is the essence of the all-new iJoy Shogun UNIV box mod. Wow. A squonk mod is sitting at the end of this list. Surprising, to say the least, considering very few squonkers grace our regular rotations. That’s because most of them do the exact same things. Other than an extra battery, or a few additional modes, squonk mods are about as basic as it gets in advanced vaping.

But leave it to Lost Vape to shift the paradigm. Because your regular squonk devices probably aren’t going to feel the same after spending some time with the Drone BF. And amazingly, it’s not only because of the (still awesome) DNA 250C chipset. This beast simply screams with its straightforward, effortless power performance. Is it worth the $200-300 it’s listing for? That depends on your threshold for wallet pain. Is it better than most any other squonk mod on the market? Absolutely.

Also, we can’t not mention this – the Drone BF is gorgeous. Maybe it’s my love of that amber ULTEM color scheme, but my translucent test model was a perfect balance of commanding design and subtlety. Plus, the thin black alloy framing that surrounds the colored plastic side panels makes for a mature, but still exciting visual appeal.

We could go on and on, but that’s what reviews are for. If you trust us (and you should) just know the Lost Vape Drone is about as good as squonk mods get. The unreal build quality, top-tier chipset and flawless bottom-feed performance should put this atop any vaper’s wish list for this year.
