If you’re a regular reader of Spinfuel VAPE you’re probably wondering, “Hey, didn’t they review the iJOY Shogun a while back?” Yes, yes we did. And we took a look at the iJOY Katana sub-ohm tank, too! But we never once tried them as a distinct pairing, so we’re throwing this preview out there to let you all know that iJOY’s premier vape mod is now available in an even more attractive package, the iJoy Shogun UNIV Starter Kit.
Plus, wouldn’t it be great if iJOY used this time to optimize its Shogun devices to be even MORE awesome? Maybe that sounds immature, but just go look at our A+ review and see just how giddy we got about this powerhouse mod.
That said, we’d jump at the chance to put the Shogun back to the head of the line in our rotations, and the Shogun UNIV kit seems like the perfect opportunity to grab a different color resin side panel (or a fresher version of the ones we love already).
Plus, the Katana tank is packed in, and it seems a lot more appropriate here than it did the first time we saw it – ironically, with the 81-watt Katana kit. While that was a rock-solid pairing, it seems like the Katana tank would benefit from a little more “oomph” powering it.
While we might have been a little hard on the Katana’s originality at the time (seriously, it’s just like iJOY’s other tanks) that doesn’t change the fact that it flat out works. iJOY’s commitment to quality, cost-effective vape tanks and coils is evident here. The 0.15-ohm KM1 mesh coils (there are two in the kit) were immediately flavorful, with ample

Our Hopes for the iJOY Shogun UNIV Kit
For once, we’re hoping that this kit gives us “more of the same” (assuming iJOY hasn’t found a way to make these components better). We want the same flawless construction, beautiful but not overdone design, and overall commitment to no-nonsense vape quality.
If you haven’t read our initial review of the Shogun mod, know that we fell in love with the firm, clicky, responsive buttons and fire key – none of our team’s test models had a dud, and none have ever stuttered, even after countless hours of use these past six months.
While I don’t believe iJOY has reworked the Shogun in any way, I DO kind of wish they added some venting near the battery compartment. Of course, the mod has never gotten too warm, much less overheated, so maybe I’m just worrying too much. But I’m a stickler for safety, and venting is usually top priority when it comes to keeping it at the forefront.
Our Fears for the iJOY Shogun UNIV Kit
Honestly, we don’t have many. And the two primary complaints we’ve held are largely based on aesthetics. But we’d love to see replaceable, swappable resin side panels, so we could find some new looks for our beloved devices. At the very least, we hope that iJOY has included some new colorways to keep this line fresh and interesting, rather than letting it idle until people slowly forget about it.
We also wouldn’t mind a slight upgrade to the “plain jane” display and menu system. While we love the Shogun UNIV’s dedication to keeping things simple, a visual and operational upgrade would bring a new sense of life to the “three click/narrow OLED” format we’ve all seen time and time again. Sure, it works just fine, but if I’m going to get a new version of this mod, I’d like to see a slight upgrade to justify the expense.
Wrapping Up…
Yeah, we’re splitting hairs – the Shogun UNIV kit is built around two proven, uncompromisingly good components. The Katana tank is a solid, high-performing, long-lasting atomizer that has a good amount of cross-compatibility to keep things interesting, and a clean, unique look to help it stand out on shelves. The Shogun UNIV mod? Quite simply, one of the best we’ve reviewed on these pages, and an easy A+ by all writers on this site.
Together? Well, we’ll have to wait and see how this marriage blossoms when the iJOY Shogun UNIV kit arrives in the next few weeks. Until then, stay tuned and check out our previous coverage of these devices, so you can make an educated decision when it hits the streets this month.
