Battery Shelf Life: When to Replace Your Vaping 18650/26650 Batteries
It’s a common question among vapers: “I’m approaching a year on a few pairs of my batteries. They seem to be working just fine, but is there a rule of thumb for when to replace my vaping 18650/26650 batteries?”
While lithium-ion batteries like our beloved 18650s and 26650s don’t have a strict “shelf life” in the same way perishable goods do, their performance degrades over time and through charge/discharge cycles. You won’t find a universal hard-and-fast rule, but most experts and manufacturers suggest considering replacement for your vaping batteries every 6 to 12 months, especially with regular, daily use.
Key indicators that it’s definitely time for new batteries include:
Significantly reduced battery life or capacity (they don’t last as long on a full charge as they used to).
Increased heat production during use or charging.
Any visible damage to the battery wrap (even minor tears or nicks).
Slower ramp-up time or a noticeable decrease in power output from your device, even on a full charge.
Any physical deformities like dents, bulges, or corrosion on the battery itself.
Even if they “seem to be working just fine” after a year of consistent use, the internal chemistry may be compromised, and their capacity and safety can be reduced. For optimal safety and performance, refreshing your battery stock within that 6-12 month window is highly recommended.
