Can I wrap a TC Clapton with Kanthal wire?
Yes, absolutely. Think of the core wire and the wrap wire as water hoses. If you hook up two hoses to the same spigot – and one is 5 inches in diameter and the other is 1/8 inch in diameter – the water will almost all go through the fat hose, and not the thin hose.
With a Clapton coil, the core TC wire has a resistance of less than 0.4 ohms (electricity flows through it easily). Using a 34ga Kanthal wrapping wire (or any other gauge, or even NiChrome 80), the total length of the wrap wire will be perhaps a dozen feet of wire, with a resistance in the tens, or even hundreds, of ohms (high resistance means the electricity has a hard time flowing through).
As a result, almost no electricity will go through the wrap. The mod will only ‘see’ the core wire and will moderate the wattage to ensure the temperature is limited.
