Vaporshark™ Hedron RX200 TC Box Mod

The Vaporshark Hedron ($69.99 Vapor Authority ) is a 200W (250W with the latest firmware upgrade available for Mac and PC), TC capable, advanced box mod designed by Vaporshark and manufactured by WISMEC. The result is a sophisticated and powerful box mod with a dead serious exterior of zinc-aluminum alloy, cut with sharp edges and finished in a deep almost-vantablack durable paint. There isn’t a hint of coyness in this somber, stylish, and tough box mod. Instead, the Hedron has an understated elegance befitting of grace and power of the Navy Seals and the stealth of an F 117A Nighthawk Fighter Jet. When I look at the Vaporshark Hedron I  hear it whisper; Do-Not-Screw-With-Me.

WISMEC

When a company like Vaporshark, Lost Vape, and a handful of others, don’t have the resources, or the inclination, to manufacturer an in-house mod, or code an operating system and build a proprietary board to serve it, they must seek out the muscle of reliable manufacturers like WISMEC to turn their designs into a reality.

WISMEC, a company sprung from the umbrella of Joyetech and eLeaf, is just a couple of years old, yet they’ve been responsible for bringing numerous box mods, mech mods, and atomizers to market on behalf of several companies, and themselves. WISMEC and Jaybo, (the busiest modder in the business), has become the de’ facto leader in helping brands bring their dreams to market. While not always successful (Reuleaux RX75 anyone?), WISMEC is never standing still. They, like SMOKTech, they are always pushing the market forward.

Although WISMEC designs and manufacturer’s products brandishing its own logo, WISMEC was designed from the ground up to be a one-stop shop for smaller brands and startups to actualize their own products, affordably. Knowing this, Vaporshark decided to seek them out to build the Hedron around the RX200S technology.

Vaporshark and EVOLV

Vaporshark is one of the most successful companies building devices around the Evolv DNA chipsets. While devices built with the Evolv board are quite successful in their own right, the expense of a box mod with a DNA board takes it out of the price range of a huge segment of potential customers. Because of the high price of a DNA box mod Evolv has its devotees and its detractors, yet there is little criticism of the latest DNA 250, other than the expense, of course.

Unlike WISMEC, Evolv designs and manufactures just the DNA boards. These boards are sold to individuals, small companies, and even large manufacturers like WISMEC (The Reuleaux DNA200), and of course to companies like Vaporshark.

Once Vaporshark commits to a new DNA box mod it still needs to outsource the manufacturing of the box mod, so Vaporshark will commit to a certain number of DNA boards and will send these boards out to a manufacturer so they can be used in the manufacturing of their Vaporshark DNA box mods. It takes time, and money, to see a new DNA-equipped box mod, and in the case of the Hedron, Vaporshark saw another way.

Growing the Vaporshark Brand

To compete for a bigger slice of the ‘branded box mod’ market, Vaporshark reached out to WISMEC to test the waters with the Vaporshark Hedron. Designed by Vaporshark, it is an excellent first step, and should it prove successful no doubt that there will be many more collaborations to come.

A company like Vaporshark, despite its many profitable retail stores and thriving online webstore, cannot invest the huge amount of capital it would require to build and staff a factory and employ engineers to develop and code new operating systems and chipsets. Frankly, I’m surprised the Vaporshark Hedron is the first collaboration with WISMEC.

About the Vaporshark Hedron

The Vaporshark Hedron is, at its core, the WISMEC Reuleaux RX200S. (the “S” in the RX200S signifies the change to the deluxe display first used in the Reuleaux) The Hedron’s abilities as a box mod is identical to the Reuleaux RX200S, which sells for $49.99 through Vapor Authority .

The Vaporshark Hedron carries a $30 premium over the WISMEC Reuleaux RX200S. If you’re looking to get into an RX200S device with the least amount of money, the WISMEC Reuleaux RX200S model is an attractive alternative, though I am sold on the upgraded design and the exterior chassis of the Vaporshark Hedron, that $30 premium is well worth it.

The Vaporshark Hedron has a maximum output range of 1 to 200W,  along with a full temperature control suite (temperature control, temperature  sensing, and temperature limiting. ) that supports three heating elements of Nickel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel. In addition, the Hedron includes the adjustable three-memory-slots and manual TCR mode for additional customization of the users vaping preferences.

The Vaporshark Hedron requires three high-amp 18650 battery cells (not included) and are inserted by way of the magnetized back battery plate. The battery bay uses gold-plated spring contacts which makes inserting the batteries easier than any Reuleaux I’ve used. The long battery ribbon makes removing the batteries a simple act of lifting the ribbon. We use the Sony VTC6 18650 batteries and they fit the Hedron nicely.

The firing button, adjustment buttons, and the 510-connector are 304-grade stainless steel, which can certainly handle the daily use of heavy vapers. The 510 connector has a gold-plated stainless steel, spring-loaded, contact pin to make a secure contact between the Hedron and the Tank/RDA.

While the USB port and included USB cable are capable of recharging the batteries in place, we recommend charging all batteries externally, if possible.

That Display

With the release of the Reuleaux 200S, WISMEC included a new, larger OLED display screen, which displays a wide array of information at a glance. Press the firing button to activate the OLED screen and the user can monitor the resistance of the atomizer coil, the wattage setting or temperature, voltage output, remaining battery life (in a single battery indicator), and the real-time output in amps.

The Vaporshark Hedron RX Safety Features

The Vaporshark Hedron includes all the modern safety features found in top-shelf box mods, including a No-Atomizer Alert, Low-Ohms Protection, Short-Circuit Protection, Battery-Imbalance Protection, Temperature Protection, Weak-Battery Protection, Low-Power Protection, Reverse-Polarity Protection, and features a 10-Second Puff Cutoff to allow long direct lung hits.

Bottom Line

Throughout the review period I used the SMOK TFV8 Cloud Beast and TFV12 Cloud Beast King (final week of the review included the TFV12). The TFV8 was equipped with the V8-T8, 0.15Ω rated at 50-260W and the TFV12 was equipped with the V12-T12 0.12Ω rated at 60-350W. The best vape experience came with the TFV8 Cloud Beast at 130W with a 70/30 VG/PG eliquid. I experienced zero misfires. Lag times (the amount of time between pressing the fire button and realizing vapor) was negligible.

As a fan of Vaporshark products, though mainly their Evolv DNA–equipped mods, I was happy  to see this WISMEC RX device because it will allow folks that won’t pay for the DNA experience to own a Vaporshark product.

When I got word on the Hedron, its $69.99 price tag was too good to pass up, so I preordered one from Vaporshark before its release. Once it arrived and I began using it I made the decision to order another one through Vapor Authority, an authorized Vaporshark Dealer.

I don’t double up on my vape gear purchases unless I plan on using the device for a long time and want to have a backup handy just in case. And although I have been enjoying several new 3x and 4x cell, high-wattage mods with various chipsets these past few months, I often found myself missing the kick-ass look and feel of the Hedron while I’m off vaping something else.

The Vaporshark Hedron has a knock out design, superb craftsmanship, and with the latest firmware, it now possesses 250 watts of power.  There are literally dozens upon dozens of excellent mods on the market today, and I could recommend any number of them to potential buyers. Even so, if you’ve ever desired a box mod that was free of pretense and gimmickry, the Hedron fits the bill quite nicely.
