Archive note — September 2026: This 2019 editorial argues a pro-vaping case from the evidence available at the time. Its categorical claims about safety, youth uptake, cessation, and long-term effects should not be read as current guidance. The CDC says no tobacco product, including e-cigarettes, is safe; e-cigarettes should not be used by youth, young adults, or during pregnancy; and any potential benefit for adults who smoke depends on complete substitution for combustible tobacco, not dual use. The FDA has not approved any e-cigarette as a smoking-cessation aid. See the CDC’s health-effects guidance and quitting guidance.
