For just $39.99 at Vapor Authority, the new SMOK QBox Kit, including the 50W QBox Mod and the SMOK Baby Beast Sub-Ohm Tank, is certainly one of the smallest mods I’ve used in a long while, but with the coil heads supplied in the kit, the 50W maximum output of the QBox means a lovely and enjoyable vaping instrument that’s huge in flavor and vapor, but stealthy enough to take anywhere. As a secondary device, the SMOK QBox is a great buy.

About the SMOK QBox Kit

Available in a variety of colors, built out of a lightweight but durable Aluminum and Zinc Alloy, with the large, famous SMOK OLED Display found on larger devices like the SMOK Alien 220 and the SMOK AL85, The SMOK QBox is just 2.15 inches high, 1.32 inches wide, and .98 inches deep. Tiny. Boxy. Cute.

The voltage range is a surprising 0.1V-9V, and the Wattage, though modest in today’s standards, is 1W to 50W, which is why the coil heads in the kit are the coils that owners should purchase when it’s time to buy replacement coils. Everything else in the SMOK QBox is, well, SMOK-standard electronics.

What is ‘SMOK Standard Electronics’?

The SMOK QBox uses the same “board” that nearly all SMOK devices use, though with various throttles. All the safety protections, and the temperature control systems are the same as you would see in larger, more powerful, and more expensive devices made by SMOK.  These now-standard features can be placed in a body of any shape or size because they all fit on a tiny board. These features include;

Integrated Ohms Meter

Battery Level Indicator

Rapid Charging

Intelligent Atomizer Recognition

Puff Monitoring System

12-Second Shut-Off

Short-Circuit Protection

Over-Heating Protection

Low-Battery Warning

Battery Life for the Petite SMOK QBox

Considering the size of the QBox, the internal 1600mAh battery is about the best you can expect. Coupled with the right tank and coil, that 1600mAh can last up to 3 hours of moderate vaping without requiring a quick charge.

The Right Tank/Coil Choice is the Baby Beast

The SMOK Baby Beast is a 3.0mL tank that is among the cornerstone of all SMOK Tanks. It’s 24.5mm width fits the QBox’s 25mm width perfectly. Each Tank matches the color of the QBox in the Kit. Mine is the “Rainbow” model, and together they look spectacular. The SMOK Baby Beast is one of the most successful sub-ohm tanks on the market due to its build quality, the non-leaking top-fill hinge method, and the large airflow slots on the base of the tank.

The SMOK TFV8 Baby Beast can use a variety of coils, and the choice will dictate the proper device powering it. I have used the V8-Baby-T8 coils, with its 50W-110W range, on box mods that include the 220W SMOK Alien and even the 350W SMOK GX350. But when it comes to vaping with the SMOK Baby Beast powered by a device like the SMOK QBox, the right coil head means everything.

SMOK includes 2 coil heads with the purchase of the QBOX Kit. These coils are the V8 Baby M2 Atomizer Coils, with a resistance of 0.25Ω. This coil head is made for lower wattage devices, including the SMOK Stick V8 (review coming this week). The coil is built in such a way as to work best with 3.7V fixed output devices, but work spectacularly well in Wattage mode on the QBox. I recommend that whenever the user picks up the QBox, that the SMOK Baby Beast is equipped with one of the two M2 coils only, otherwise, battery life and performance will suffer. The M2 coils are not compatible with SMOK’s larger TFV8 tanks.

The Two V8 Baby M2 Coil Specifications Are:

  • SMOK Baby M2 Coil Family
    • V8 Baby M2 0.25 ohm Coil Head
      • Dual Coil
      • 3.7V Direct Output
    • V8 Baby M2 0.15 ohm Coil Head
      • Dual Coil
      • 3.7V Direct Output

Keep in mind that SMOK Coils are Kanthal and Organic Cotton. That being the case, the Temperature Control system isn’t a concern. Kanthal is not TC compatible.

The Real World Report

When the shipment of the SMOK QBox Kits arrived, I chose one of the Rainbow QBox’s and retreated to my makeshift office (half a condominium bedroom), and proceeded to unbox it. The box, for whatever reason, gave me the impression that the QBox would be larger than what it turned out to be. Barely more than 2 inches high, my first impression was ‘surprise’, which soon turned into ‘adorable’, and after a few hours of vaping with it, I knew the QBox was going to be another hit for SMOK.

SMOK QBox Kit Is Tiny But A Worthy New Box Mod and Tank - SPINFUEL VAPE MAGAZINEWhen it comes to vape gear that I use outside of the Review Arena, I wasn’t so sure that the SMOK QBox would find a spot in my collection of mods. I’ve been using the SMOK Stick V8, the SMOK Stick Baby, as well as the SMOK Vape Pen Plus lately, for review and as occasional personal devices, so where would the QBox fit in?

The fact is, I’m exposed to hundreds of box mods and tube mods, and unlike most people I have the ‘pick of the litter’ constantly. From the least expensive to the outrageously expensive, from the low wattage vape pen to the extreme wattage of the SnowWolf 365, I’m given the opportunity to use, and/or own, whichever mods I desire. This has become a real problem for me as someone that has been writing reviews for almost 6 years now. It is impossible to recommend one device over another because we are all different, and we look for different attributes in our vape gear. In addition, things and opinions change.

What I can tell you about the SMOK QBox Kit is that the price of $39.99 is a good one. The materials used in making the box mod and the tank are high quality (as is most, or all, of SMOK products), and the performance of the QBox and SMOK Baby Beast, equipped with the M2 coil is delightful. Great flavor from the Kanthal and pure Organic Cotton in the coil head, ample vapor production with the right vape juice and wattage from the QBox, and the battery life is longer than you might expect, considering.

If you look at the photos that accompany this review and think to yourself that the QBox is what you’re looking for, then choosing it is the right decision. On the other hand, if 50W or Direct Voltage of 3.7v is a little less than you want, if the size is just too small, or if you want to use larger tanks, then perhaps you should take a pass.

UPDATE: It has been 2 weeks since I wrote the review above. After dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s, I kept the SMOK QBox active for a few days. Then I began picking it up less and less, as I did with the three vape pens from SMOK. The QBox has become the mod I might pick up when I leave the office or my house, or it could be one of the vape pens. It makes a dandy mod when I’m out shopping, especially while driving. But, as a primary mod, or even a secondary mod, my needs are bigger.

My current favorite ‘middle-of-the-road’ box mod is the SMOK G150. It’s 4200mAh internal battery last many, many hours, the 150W of maximum wattage allows me to use my two favorite Sub-Ohm tanks, the SMOK TFV8 Cloud Beast, and the MELO 300 and its 0.17Ω Kanthal coil.

SMOK QBox Kit Is Tiny But A Worthy New Box Mod and Tank - SPINFUEL VAPE MAGAZINEMy opinion of the SMOK QBox Kit has not changed, it is still a marvelous little device matched with the perfect tank and coil. For Vapers looking for a mod and tank that fits the criteria of what the QBox Kit is offering, they would be hard pressed to find anything better.
