Despite reviewing countless Wismec mods over the years, I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know much about JayBo, the person behind the company’s iconic mod designs. But after a fantastic year of new devices, that might change. Because the Wismec Reuleaux RX2 mod is easily the best one to date.
Oh, like all Wismec mods – and mods in general, for that matter, there are a few things we’d change. And yeah, we might be getting a little tired of the same look and feel. But the dual-21700 RX2 might just represent the pinnacle of the JayBo-inspired collection. Let’s dive down deep and see what makes it so good.
Colors and designs are subjective, but I’m going to come right out and say it – my emerald green RX2 test Model is gorgeous. The deep, metallic green contrasts nicely with the black portions of the aluminum frame, without being overwhelming or loud. It’s very similar to the bronze-like hue of my beloved Reuleaux RX Gen3 (reviewed here), and I can’t say enough good things about it.
That said, even with the awesome color scheme, the RX2 21700 is definitely “another Wismec Reuleaux Mod.” The same color scheme. The same hexagonal format. The same display and controls. If you have one or more of these devices, you might want to think long and hard about dropping cash on this one, since it functions and feels very much like the countless others we’ve seen over the years.
The second thing I noticed was just how compact and slender the Mod is – which is surprising, considering the two (included) 21700 batteries needed to power the device. Similar to the Reuleaux RX 2/3 (reviewed here) in its dual-battery configuration, Wismec made a slim, relatively short device that might surprise you when taking it out of the Box.
In a nice touch, Wismec includes a pair of 21700 cells in the Box, as well as a battery sleeve adapter for those who want to use their existing 18650 batteries. But surprisingly, 20700 batteries are not supported. In testing the RX2 21700 in both formats, I can tell you that battery life is excellent with both types, but the 21700 cells added considerable time between charges. While you won’t be kicking it at 230 watts for an entire day, I enjoyed a VERY long duration before needing a charge – and believe me, I wasn’t using it lightly.
One nice improvement on the Reuleaux RX2 21700 is the slide and lock function of the rear battery door, which closes and secures with a satisfying “click.” But be sure to be careful when removing it, since it can get a little snug with the larger batteries, and you might be tempted to give it a firm tug.
I can personally guarantee that tugging too hard on the sliding door will result in a pair of 21700 cells flying in different directions around the room.
(Don’t say we didn’t warn you.)
Operating the Wismec Reuleaux RX2 21700 Mod
The standard 1.3-inch OLED screen returns, and as always, is a winner. I mentioned in the preview that the monochrome display and control scheme did not need to be changed, but after revisiting this system again, I realize the operations might be getting a little long in the tooth.
That’s not to say they don’t work well – Wismec’s controls and menus are among the best in the industry, in terms of navigation. But with so many newer, more intuitive setups coming around each day, this system now seems a little more dated than I expected. Hardly a dealbreaker, but for future Reuleaux iterations Wismec should strongly consider using something like its own AMAZING Ravage230 (reviewed here).
This aside, the firmware houses a very stable, capable, proven engine that powers the RX2 21700 to a lofty 230 watts with ease. It may not be the prettiest system out there, but it works well and doesn’t get in the way.
In the preview we were concerned that the RX2 21700 might not feature TCR adjustments, but rest assured, there are available slots for TCR configurations. However, I could not find or access any bypass Mode via the menu system. I imagine this functionality could come in the form of a firmware update, if the demand was high enough. But with all this regulated power on hand, I’m not sure many will miss bypass functionality.
The Reuleaux RX2 21700 operation buttons are firm, clicky and responsive, just as we’ve come to expect from this series. The oversized fire key is a highlight, as well. Nothing new or innovative, nor does it have to be – the RX2 21700 just flat out works.
The Wismec Gnome Sub-Ohm Tank
Wismec completes the Reuleaux RX2 230W Dual-21700 Mod Kit by throwing in its popular Gnome sub-ohm tank. While we love the flavor this little guy puts out, we can’t help but wish Wismec would “up the stakes” a bit and include an RBA deck, or a larger glass and tank extender section to increase capacity.
As it stands, the 4mL max capacity seems like it would be enough, but these potent WM-series coils are very thirsty, and I found myself refilling countless times over the course of an afternoon. The resulting flavor and vapor production is fantastic, but we wish we didn’t need to keep an e-liquid bottle handy at all times.
As a throw-in with this Kit, the Gnome is a welcome addition. But if a new, larger-capacity Gnome 2 appeared in the next Wismec Kit, we wouldn’t be upset.
Vaping the Wismec Reuleaux RX2 21700 Mod
As we’ve indicated in so many other Reuleaux product reviews, this series is all about power. And with a pair of potent 21700 batteries included in the Box, users will get a sense of why they might want to shift to larger capacity cells sooner rather than later.
We’ve tested several 20700 and 21700 Mods, and only saw Moderate gains in longevity and efficiency. However, the Reuleaux RX2 21700 operates significantly better using the larger batteries. While the included 18650 adapter does its job well, I noticed the Mod struggling a bit to hit the 230-watt limit, occasionally misfiring or stuttering. With the 21700s in place, there wasn’t an ounce of faltering, all the way to the maximum output.
Plus, I noticed significantly more run time using the larger cells; I saw nearly 90 minutes more operating time when vaping one atomizer consistently at 80 watts, when compared to the 18650s. Now, to be fair, the RX2 21700 is no slouch in the battery department – both setups should be more than enough to get you through the day. But this represented the first time I’ve seen such difference in performance.
As I mentioned, the wattage performance was strong. Both setups allowed for 230-watt output, though I’d probably limit this type of use with the 18650s – there was a few too many stutter steps along the way for me to personally recommend it. Of course, these hiccups occurred under testing conditions. I’m sure the average user will get more than enough power for their liking.
Temperature control performance and adjustments were flawless. I’ve said this before, but for a company so invested in powerful Mods, the temperature control precision is fantastic. I used a number of different RDAs and RTAs with TC coils, and the RX2 21700 handled each perfectly, with no erratic jumping or random warnings.
Wrapping up, and Score…
Again, your enjoyment of Wismec Reuleaux RX2 21700 will come down to whether or not you’ve tired of the brand’s look and feel. If this is your first Mod from the long-running series, then it’s likely you might just consider this your new favorite device. However, if you own any of the myriad other editions from the Reuleaux series, even the boosted battery power and compact form might not be enough to warrant another purchase.
But we shouldn’t speculate. Taken at face value, the Wismec Reuleaux RX2 21700 Mod Kit is an excellent package for any vaper looking to increase power without needing a gargantuan device. The wonderfully compact size and powerful performance make this Kit a tremendous value.
