Before we describe the Kylin M device itself, let’s spend another minute or two talking about this unbelievable spec sheet. If you’re a standard pod mod vaper, there’s a pod and two prebuilt coils. If you like to DIY, Vandy Vape includes a build deck and four (!) sheets of mesh, in different materials types for temp control enthusiasts!

In short: If you like to vape, the Kylin M kit is there for you. Period.

 

 

What’s even better is that all of this seems like it should be in a giant, bulky vape device. But the Kylin bucks that trend by giving users all this in a sleek, pocket-friendly package, with fantastic color options and a serious sense of style. Add in a rock-solid zinc alloy frame, PEEK insulation and tremendous attention to detail and you have a kit worth talking about.

 

The build quality is notable — not just for its durability, but also for how much attention was given to user experience. From the firm, responsive fire and adjustment buttons, to the clear liquid viewing window, and even the well-placed venting, there’s just an air of professionalism you don’t find in many AIO kits these days.

 

That said, I would have happily traded some pocketability in exchange for a little extra power and longevity. While the single-18650 format works well, I found myself needing to carry additional cells if taking the Kylin M out for an evening. Maybe we’re not going out much these days, but even in a restricted social society, hauling extra batteries is never enjoyable.

 

But, steering us back to the positive, the massive 5mL capacity pod compartment is the most-versatile use of the format to date. No matter if you DIY (using the unique metal rod/capillary system) or prefer the prebuilds, the pod is easy to use and high performing. This might not be as versatile as a 32mm RTA, but there’s more than enough room to make things work and work well.

Vaping the Vandy Vape Kylin M

Versatility means nothing if the device doesn’t perform, and expectedly, the Vandy Vape Kylin M AIO absolutely delivers on that end. Though the 70-watt device clearly leans toward direct lung vaping, there’s plenty of enjoyment to be had for restricted lung vapers, as well. While this probably won’t appeal to dyed-in-the-wool MTL users, most other vapers will find a lot to like.

 

Beginning with the prebuilt coils, I got off to a rough start, even after priming the heads and letting them soak in a full tank before firing. These are smaller coils, and it appears they perform a little like older atomizers, needing some initial “break in” time before they really hit their stride. Thankfully, once they were fully saturated and the dry hits subsided, both the standard and Clapton heads had a nice balance of flavor and vapor production.

 

Interestingly, though, they seemed to work best with 50/50 e-liquid blends, such as the many amazing flavors (like Strawberries and Cream or Summer Peach) at The Plume Room  rather than the more-viscous juices I usually put to work. This blend allowed for a balance of flavor and juice flow, so the coils never dried out or tasted “off” during testing. I admit I had to dig to find some of these blends in my liquid collection, but I’m glad I did, since the performance was far better.

 

(Note: Do NOT use nic salt juices in here. The flow is far too loose, leading to overly intense hits and even some mild leaking.)

 

The Prebuilds Are Great.

But when moving to the rebuildable deck and the awesome mesh coil strips, the Kylin M went from “good” to “great” in rapid fashion. Not only did my usual 70/30 juice blends work much better in this configuration, but the flavor and vapor rose to ridiculous levels of performance. I genuinely couldn’t believe this amount of flavor clarity and cloud production was coming from a pocketable AIO mod.

 

Admittedly, the steel rod wicking/juice flow arrangement is a little antiquated, but I couldn’t believe how well it worked. My cotton never once experienced dry spots, and the flavor never waned, even during heavy use.

 

Even better, I was able to generate this high level of performance without exceeding 40 watts, keeping the vape cooler and more comfortable, while also preserving that precious battery life just a little longer.

 

I may never understand how the capillary wicking action works, but I’ve also never seen it implemented this well.

 

Our only complaint (and we mean only) is the afore-mentioned battery life, which was mediocre at best. Admittedly, we put the Kylin M through some heavy testing, so users might get a little more oomph than we did. But ultimately, we’re all crossing our fingers that Vandy Vape is planning on a dual-18650 version in the very near future.

Pros:

• Awesome, compact design
• The most versatile kit we’ve seen in years
• Outstanding RTA performance

Cons:

• Coils need a little breaking in before getting up to speed
• Battery life is middling

Kylin M – The Bottom Line

When the Vandy Vape Kylin M AIO kit showed up our first reaction was “jack of all trades, master of none.” Well, we’ve never been happier to be wrong. The Kylin M kit not only blew us away with how versatile it was in such a compact package, but also with how fantastic its performance was in every configuration.

 

Vandy Vape, consider this a spoiler — barring a sudden surge of innovation in the AIO mod universe, the Kylin M kit WILL be on our year-end “best of” lists. It gets our highest recommendation. And it’s available now at Element Vape.
