Joyetech Ocular C 150W TC Box Mod Review
The Joyetech Ocular 80W TC Box Mod was sent to us many weeks ago. It sat on our shelves after a cursory test drive, and was never reviewed by our staff afterward. Although we were certainly impressed with all the new features being brought to a new box mod, it suffered from the same problem the first Joyetech Cuboid did; it was too heavy. Although this model of the Ocular is still being sold by Joyetech, I can’t help but think it had been designated ‘End of Life” status. ‘End of Life’ means that once the current stock is sold off, no more will be made. I don’t know this to be a fact, but after using the new Joyetech Ocular C 150W TC Box Mod, I can’t see anyone considering the Ocular over the vastly improved Ocular C.
When new, or prerelease, products arrive for review we open one up, examine for a few minutes, and decide. “Is this device something we should assign to a reviewer immediately, or can it wait?” Something about a device, whether it’s a box mod, atomizer, or accessory, needs to stand out in a positive or negative way for us to make that decision. The original Joyetech Ocular had three reasons to be left on the shelf; the weight, the relatively low wattage of 80W, and the internal 5000mAh battery.
The Joyetech Ocular is heavy, too heavy. And with all the fancy, cutting-edge multimedia features the Ocular brings to the vape community, the 5000mAh battery just wasn’t enough, and the modest 80W of power limited its appeal, advanced Vapers would need more power. We opted to wait a while and we put our writers to work on other devices. Then, to be frank, we lost interest and never bothered to go back to it.
Enter the Vastly Improved Joyetech Ocular C 150W TC Box Mod
The Joyetech Ocular C 150W TC Box Mod has improved upon the original Ocular in so many ways that I couldn’t wait to use it and review it. Gone is the 5000mAh internal battery. Gone is the 80W maximum output. Gone is the weight issue. This is the box mod that should have been released in the first place. Now the question is; “Can Joyetech get the word out that the Ocular C is a different animal?” I hope so, because the entire staff is over the moon with this newer model.
About the Joyetech Ocular C 150W TC Box Mod
The Joyetech Ocular C is the most technologically progressive box mod we’ve ever seen in this industry to date. This much-improved model is the type of box mod that can make tech nerds drool. Below are some of the features that have earned the Ocular C a new-found respect among our advanced Vapers.
The Joyetech Ocular C integrates all Joyetech’s cutting edge features housed in an elegant zinc-alloy chassis. The heart of the Ocular C is the 1.68 Inch TFT Touch Screen with full-color output. The interface of the display is easy to understand and intuitive. It includes touch ‘gestures’ that controls its operation. It’s so simple to use I could pass on reading the manual if I wanted to, but since this a review, a manual is a must.
The most exciting new features from the original and the “C” model includes the multimedia support. With the Ocular C, Vapers can play MP3 Music and view high resolution photos using the Photo Player. The Joyetech Ocular C comes with a built-in 2GB of flash storage to house all the songs and photos. Accessing these features is done through the intuitive interface on the touchscreen display.
The Joyetech Ocular C includes a 3.5mm headphone jack (headphones sold separately) for listening to pristine sounding music stored on the flash drive. I use my iPhone ear buds to listen to music, and it works perfectly well.
In addition, the Joyetech Ocular C comes with a mobile App (Apple iOS and Android) that the user pairs the smartphone and Ocular C via Bluetooth 4. The app allows the Vaper to set a vaping plan, import photos and music to your device and even communicate with other Joyetech owners and friends.
The 320×240 Hi-Res 1.68” TFT Display
The new Joyetech Ocular C TFT Touchscreen displays all the essential information on its super-clear full-color screen. It even allows for custom screensavers with a clock or any images you want to use.
Dual 18650 Cell Support
Doing away with the 5000mAh internal battery of the original Ocular, the Ocular C is powered by two replaceable 18650 hi-amp batteries. Now, instead of waiting on the Ocular to recharge the user can replace drained batteries quickly and easily with the hinged battery door on the bottom of the mod.
Joyetech’s most advanced chipset allows the Ocular C to output a maximum of 200W of power (with the upcoming firmware upgrade). Think about that for a moment, a dual 18650 box mod with 200 watts of power. (the upcoming firmware upgrade will be available soon. Right now, today, it’s being sold as a 150W device. Twice the wattage of the original Ocular.)
The Ocular C also sports a sophisticated temperature control suite that is compatible with Nickel, Titanium and Stainless Steel 316. With the simple-to-use interface it’s never been easier to set the mode, and the temperature/wattage for the preferred style of vaping of the user.
In addition to the full temperature control suite the Joyetech Ocular C features an adjustable TCR output for an accurate user-defined fine-tuning.
The best touchscreen yet, a strong chassis, along with a feature-packed chipset, the Joyetech Ocular C is the most advanced box mod to come from Joyetech yet.
Real World Experience
Although we passed on the Joyetech Ocular for several reasons, including being too heavy, and pushing so many great features with a 5000mAh internal battery, the new Ocular C corrects most, if not all, of the issues we had with the original.
I still wish Joyetech had managed to shave off a little more weight, but considering the complexity and hi-resolution of the TFT display, it might not have been possible. Still, using the Ocular C is a lot a fun and there is never an issue with waiting for the internal battery to recharge. Heck, I’ve since added this device to my rotation of vape gear, that’s how much it has endeared itself to me.
Does a box mod need to play music or show high-quality photos to be a great mod? No, not all. But, whether you consider these multimedia features to be a gimmick, or innovation, is beside the point. The Joyetech Ocular C packs as much power as 99% of the vaping public needs, is very simple to use in any mode chosen by its user, and when coupled with a good Sub-Ohm Tank (I prefer the Melo 300 by eLeaf or the SMOK TFV8 Big Baby), it provides an excellent vape experience.
