Aegis Squonk Review
Hey all – it’s been a minute since we published a new review, so why not kick off this latest round of commentary with the all-new Geek Vape Aegis Squonk 100W mod? This compact and palm-friendly bottom-feed device feels great in the hands, fires ultra-responsively thanks to the chipset, and has enough juice capacity for all-day exploits.
Easy enough – just give it an “A” and we’ll be on our way, right? Unfortunately, there’s a few things you might NOT like with the Aegis Squonk, so we’ll have to use a few more words to tell the story. Let’s start with the specs and go from there.
Aegis Squonk Official Description
Satisfy your vaping needs with the new Geek Vape AEGIS SQUONK 100W Box Mod, presenting all the features you love of the original Aegis. This time reincarnated as a single 18650 battery cell powered box mod outfitted with an interchangeable squonking attachment. The bottle space holds a 10mL squonk bottle within the backing of the box mod.
Equipped with the traditional all-around protection of an IP67 rating, the Aegis Squonk continues its lineage of dustproofing, shockproofing, and waterproofing, extending the protection to this current reiteration. Utilizing a wattage range of 5-100W, the Aegis Squonk can be paired with most, if not all, your favorite RDA’s, RTA’s, or sub-ohm tanks, thanks to the advanced AS-100 Chipset at the helm.
Providing incredible power output at accurate and stable levels, the responsiveness of the Aegis Squonk Mod is impressive, providing an all-encompassing temperature control suite that accepts a range of material, including, but not limited to, stainless steel, nickel, and titanium heating elements.
Pros/Cons – Aegis Squonk:
- Comfortable, solid design
- Surprising battery life
- Effortless squonk performance
- Ridiculous process to remove/clean squonk bottles
- Battery door is a tired, inconvenient design
- The grip never felt 100% natural due to button placement
Initial Impressions of the Aegis Squonk Kit
Well, you definitely can’t get on Geek Vape for straying — the Aegis line of mods have all centered on the same look and feel, save for a few aesthetic differences year over year. The Aegis Squonk stays right in line with its predecessors, complete with the velvety rubber exterior, bright colored accents, clearly laid out display and rock-solid build quality.
But, because the Aegis Squonk is a single-18650 device, it IS noticeably smaller and more compact.
A few items of note: The Aegis Squonk has the fire key and squonk bottle opening on opposite sides of the device, which might present an issue to those used to using the device with one hand. While a firing and squonking hand position is a matter of preference, I found it a little awkward to squeeze the bottle with a thumb while holding the mod in a trigger grip.
Turning it around might appease those who like to squonk with a ring finger, but the fire button isn’t really set up for comfortable thumb trigger use. Again, just my preferences here, but I doubt I’m the only one facing this right now.
Also, the screw cap bottom battery door might be a nice nod to older vape mod design, the format’s time has come and gone. Why not just have a nicely hinged door for quick battery changes? This screw cap might be secure, but it’s hardly convenient when you’re out and about.
But the biggest inconvenience by a country mile is having to remove two tiny hex screws whenever you want to change the 10mL squonk bottle. If you’re anything like me, you clean your squonk gear whenever possible, to avoid “off” flavors and leaky connections. In an effort to keep things secure and compact, the Aegis Squonk hides the bottle beneath these screws, making it an annoying chore to swap out on the fly.
Thankfully, it’s not all bad news. For starters, there was VERY little leaking and condensation in the squonk bottle chamber, thanks to a firm, well-molded bottle. And the Aegis Squonk also has one of the best refill ports around, with a perfectly made port that prevents overflow and spitback.
Yes, you’ll probably need to remove your RDA to fill it with any larger bottle, which is an annoyance in itself. But for once, I didn’t feel the need to keep a roll of paper towels with me whenever refilling the large-capacity bottle, so let’s call this a win.
In a strange turn of events, the 100-watt Aegis Squonk might be the best-performing single-18650 device in my collection. Not just by squonk mod standards, but by those from all low-mid wattage mods. On a single 18650, I managed 3+ solid hours of vaping — usually above 80 watts!
Now, to be fair, 3+ hours isn’t going to set any world records, and a lot of this centers on how hard you push the device. But for more casual vapers and newcomers to squonk vaping, this has to be considered a small, but rewarding victory.
Vaping the Geek Vape Aegis Squonk
Go back to any of our Aegis mod reviews, and you’ll likely see the words “smooth” and “powerful” sprinkled liberally throughout the text. But there’s a good reason for the redundancy — Geek Vape (and its chipsets) produce near-effortless vaping. Even on a bottom-feed squonk mod, every draw was potent, quick and flavorful, with very little instance of stuttering or skipping.
I used a variety of BF-RDAs during my testing (I didn’t get a complete kit to review, though one is available) and found that simple, single-coil RDAs were perfectly suited for the compact Aegis Squonk. Though 100 watts is more than enough power to make a dual-coil atomizer sing cloudy melodies, a more flavor-focused, lower-wattage build is the best way to make the Aegis live its best life.
Thanks to a wide and welcoming 510 connection, just about every RDA in my collection sat flush and accepted juice pumps without any leaks or concerns. And thanks to the stiff, well-made bottle, it was much easier to control juice flow on any of the RDAs without worrying about overfilling the decks. It might not sound like much, but this little extra sense of control led to a more enjoyable experience.
Our Score and Last Words – Aegis Squonk
If you’re an Aegis enthusiast and need to own every device in the line, then the Aegis Squonk is going to fit the bill nicely for your collection. It’s extremely well-made, high-performing and right “/” with Geek Vape’s other products.
It’s not perfect, and the quirks it has might turn off prospective buyers, but the Aegis Squonk has it where it counts, and is another testament to Geek Vape’s know-how and expertise.
