When e-cigarettes first began to steal market share away from traditional enthusiast industries, it was simply a matter of inevitability before the technology would impact the botanical community. Soon, the herbal and wax vaporizer stormed the market, and “going green” has never looked the same. At this integration rate, the digital route will eventually overtake analog methods.

Because of this ever-evolving dynamic, pen-style vaporizer manufacturers experience tremendous pressure and competition. It’s no longer adequate just to rely on past achievements and accolades; today’s herbal and wax industry demands engineers stay on top of their game. Any miscue or misstep could be costly in terms of time and customers lost and making up ground.

Entering this never-dull fray is Cloud Pen. They’ve earned a tremendous reputation for developing sleek, discrete platforms which are perfect for on-the-go vaporization. Furthermore, Cloud Pen prides itself in seeing the right balance between performance, functionality, and value. As such, Cloud Pen vaporizers are competitively priced against competitive rivals such as Source Vapes and KandyPens.

Still, the tide is changing once again in the green vaping world. An increasing number of manufacturers are cutting the bells and whistles and focusing largely on performance-value metrics. Can the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer, which features dual herbal and wax compatibility, compete with e-devices that are offering similar functionality for less?

CloudPen 3.0 Herb - Wax Vaporizer Review – Spinfuel VAPE Magazine

The CloudPen 3.0 is Sexy Cool, Really...

If any company is capable of tackling the competitive challenge that “value vaporizers” impose, it’s Cloud Pen. Their vaporizers feature an understated elegance towards which mature audiences, and those that simply prefer ultimate discretion, gravitate. While the broader botanical industry is gaining acceptance, it’s still a divisive issue. To avoid unnecessary attention or conflict, being inconspicuous is almost always preferable.

“ELEMENT

At the same time, I wouldn’t call Cloud Pen devices boring. All of their products are elegantly crafted and feel great to the touch. Furthermore, the manufacturer offers multiple color schematics, depending on your style and preference. Finally, their vape-pen portfolio has varying degrees of aesthetic appeal and pizzazz (their upcoming Chloris Vaporizer is a prime example).

I personally find the CloudPen 3.0 to be “sexy cool.” It’s elegant, clean, and professional, which I believe are attributes needed to give the vaping and herbal industries additional credibility. I’m not the biggest fan of gimmicky vaporizers, so as full disclosure, my opinion carries some bias.

What makes the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer distinct within their product lineup is its dual herbal and wax-concentrate compatibility. The aforementioned Chloris is herbal only, while the highly-regarded Paragon Vaporizer is exclusively for wax-concentrate use. Cloud Pen hopes to dial up the performance metric with this “duality,” but this can also be a mixed bag.

On one side of the equation, you have to love the effort that any manufacturer brings to this area. After all, it’s better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. If you want to experiment with other flavors and nuances, you technically have that option with the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer.

On the other end, there’s vaping, and then there’s vaping done right. What happens all too often with the portable format is that both herbal and wax functions are severely compromised, or that only one function is truly usable, thus rendering the dual compatibility moot.

Like I said, being a vape-pen manufacturer is never easy.

First Impressions of the CloudPen 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer

As previously noted, I prefer the clean, professional look, and the CloudPen 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer aesthetically hits all the right notes. Right from the outer packaging – which features minimalist artwork laid on top of a crisp, black background – Cloud Pen sets the mood perfectly. I get the impression that the manufacturer is reaching out to true vape aficionados, not fan-boys.

“AVAILABLE”

Opening up the package results in a familiar impression that most vapers get when they buy a Cloud Pen product, which is superb discretion. In almost any color option, the 3.0 Vaporizer looks just like a pen or highlighter. The idea, of course, is to conceal the vape device from outsiders in the first place. If, however, you are caught unaware, don’t panic! Chances are, non-vapers won’t know what you’re up to (unless you’re billowing out a cloud!).

More often than not, you’re not going to run into problems based on the diminutive dimensions of the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer. At around 5.5 inches tall, and a little over 2 inches in width, the V3 device can be tucked away virtually anywhere at a moment’s notice. With everything else that people carry in their pockets or purse, the hybrid-vape pen simply blends into the busyness of modern life.

Of the color options available, I really dig the black design, as I’m sure most others will. Combined with the yellow, LED back-lit operation button, the overall contrast evokes a powerful and attractive aura. In the looks department, I’d give it top marks for concealability with the right touch of sexiness.

Aside from the great looks, the most distinguishing attribute of the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer is its multi-tiered functionality. Included in the vaporizer kit are a dual ceramic-coil atomizer, a vertical ceramic-rod atomizer, and a dry-herb atomizer. Additionally, Cloud Pen brings in a Cloud Atlas 1.0 glass attachment, five mouthpieces, wax and dry herb tensils, and one silicone jar.

That’s a considerable number of accessories when compared to Cloud Pen’s main competitors. Obviously, value-vaporizer kits won’t be able to touch it, so in terms of raw value for the money, Cloud Pen wins again.

Cloudy Vapor Quality from the 3.0

I love that manufacturers like Cloud Pen are stepping up to the plate and delivering more value for their customers. But unless the forwarded functionalities actually work (never mind work well), the value-add can seem more like a liability. While I wouldn’t label the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer such a harsh term, I have to be straight: the hybrid capacity of the 3.0 is more hype than substance.

On the positive front, the “hybrid” e-device’s wax component works well. Thanks to its quick-fire, single-button operation, you can emit reasonably strong vapor volume with the 3.0. In addition, the portable CloudPen produces adequately enjoyable hits from your choice concentrates. I wouldn’t call it desktop e-rig quality, so the V3 is largely appropriate for beginner vapers and those making a transition towards the digital platform.

The herbal function, though, needs considerable work to satisfy even casual vape users. For starters, the herbal chamber is very small, even relative to other herbal vaporizers. That means you’re only limited to short sessions before requiring a reload. Second, the small chamber translates to virtually no distance at all between the heating source and your botanicals. Unless you’re gingerly with the operating button, your flavors are prone to burning or combustion.

The other problem that impacts proper herbal vaporization is the complete absence of temperature control. To modulate your experience, you have to carefully “pump” the power button as holding it down will create excessive heat, almost guaranteeing to burn your botanicals. The most obvious risk here is inhaling smoke. However, you should also be aware that burning botanicals creates a pungent smell that zeroes in laypeople to exactly what you’re doing!

On the plus side, the Cloud Pen 3.0 herb and wax vaporizer does deliver herbal vapor in a pinch, so I’m a bit torn. I appreciate that I can have a hybrid vape-pen in an exceptionally discreet and compact platform. But the majority of my usage is for the wax-concentrate function. For that, I have confidence that I can vape in a variety of circumstances without drawing unnecessary and unwanted attention.

The herbal function is just lackluster for all but specifically defined and controlled environments. In the privacy of my own home, I could play around with its dual capacity. But then again, if you have an e-rig setup, why bother?

A “Super Sub,” Not a Starter

What the CloudPen 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer does, it does well. But the drawback, as previously stated, is that other marketed functions fall short of consumer expectations. In my opinion, this makes the CloudPen 3.0 a “super sub,” not a starting player.

In soccer (or football for our international audience), a super sub is a specialist player that comes in to shift the dynamic and momentum of the match. Quite often, the super sub is a veteran that has a special quality to score clutch goals, but doesn’t have the legs to last the entire 90+ minutes. Thus, these substitutes are brought in during the latter half of the match to either score or setup the decisive play.

The CloudPen 3.0 is easily one of the most classy and concealable vape pens available today; thus, I’ll reach for it when I know I have a busy day waiting for me. Again, the wax-concentrate use works the best in the V3 platform. However, I like the fact that the hybrid function is there.

Certainly, it’s better to have this dual ability than going without. Just don’t expect a mind-blowing experience with this function. If you’re okay with getting a quick high, then the Cloud Pen device will likely suit you to a T.

But as far as using this as my all-around vaporizer, the limitations show. Although decently constructed, the 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer doesn’t have too many “wow” elements. For instance, I dig the fact that Cloud Pen integrated a micro-USB port in their device, which makes it convenient to charge. But as useful as this is, it’s not unique as many, if not most, devices today incorporate this portal.

Also, the 650 mAh battery is powerful, but it’s a standard size for vape pens. It’s efficient and I can get several sessions throughout the day. I wouldn’t call it remarkable compared to other pen-style vaporizers in its class, but it’s definitely solid and in line with expectations.

While the CloudPen 3.0 may sound like a compromised vaporizer, it’s actually a competent unit that is trying a little too hard. Similar to an aging star veteran, you have to know when to deploy your asset and when to hold off.

If you utilize the V3 in its ideal groove and recognize its limitations ahead of time, I think you’re going to be happy with the CloudPen 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer Kit. For the money, you get a substantial array of accessories, and you have the assurance of Cloud Pen’s manufacturing quality and brand-name reputation.

Final Thoughts about the CloudPen 3.0 Herb and Wax Vaporizer

Like any vaporizer, the decision to purchase the CloudPen 3.0 Vaporizer Kit comes down to preference. However, this is especially the case for this platform, as you’ll deal with several positives and some key drawbacks.

Vapers who want or need total discretion will gravitate towards the CloudPen 3.0 design work. My personal preference is to keep things clean and professional, and that’s exactly what Cloud Pen offers. Moreover, the dimensions are perfect for “conceal carry.” Should you need to go incognito, the V3 vaporizer does so effortlessly.

On usage quality, the 3.0 produces good, hearty vapor and nice hits in its wax-concentrate method. The experience is on par with mid-tier, dedicated wax pens so I have no complaints here. Where Cloud Pen goes a little off the rails is the herbal option. It does the job, but that’s about it. If you want a superb botanical experience, it’s better to go with a category-specific vaporizer.

With all that said, I dig Cloud Pen’s value proposition. Within the 3.0 kit, you’ll find plenty of goodies to keep you busy, and all the components to maintain your vaporizer in good shape. I wish that the herbal functionality was improved, thereby bringing more value to what the kit offers.

As such, Cloud Pen herb and wax vaporizer does open the door to competitors, who will likely bear down on the price point. But one thing that the upstarts lack is reputation. CloudPen vaporizers has that in abundance, so the 3.0 will find many homes. Just be sure to understand the pros and cons and this will be a satisfying relationship.  Available now at NugRepublic.com where you can shop with confidence knowing you are getting an authentic Cloud Pen product at a great price.
