Joyetech eGo Twist VV – A Review by Tom McBride with John Manzione

Over the past year I avoided eGo style hardware because all I could find were eGos with flat-tips. I hate flat tips. It’s like trying to vape a pipe, and I don’t like pipes. But then the round tipped Clearomizers came to the marketplace and suddenly eGo batteries with a Clearomizer looked pretty darn good. Well, for that matter, Clearomizers look good with anything, especially eGo batteries. Since the first time I used an eGo battery with a Clearomizer it’s been my most-used hardware.

Three weeks ago I was presented the newest Joyetech eGo kit from MyFreedomSmokes to review. I don’t want to give away too much, yet, but suffice it to say that from the day I first vaped from it I’ve not used anything else.

The Packaged Starter Kit – $89.99 (MSRP $129.99)

  • 2x Joyetech eGo-C Twist 650mAh Batteries
  • 2x CE5 eGo Clearomizers – 2.0 ohm
  • 10x CE5 replacement heads – 2.4 ohm
  • 1x USB Wire Charger
  • 1x A/C to USB Converter
  • 1x E-Cig Zippered Carrying Case Large
  • 1x Empty 10ml Dropper Bottle (for carrying your liquid with you)

The 2 Joyetech eGo-C Twist’s are Cherry Red, and man they are spectacularly, strikingly, heavenly, gorgeously… RED.

In addition to being the most incredible shade of red, the finish is also that ‘rubberized’ paint that our editor talks about all the time. They feel both smooth, yet non-slippery. The color alone is worth the price of admission.

Twist

The eGo-C Twist (variable voltage) has become my favorite eGo battery. Being able to go from 3.2v to 4.8v with an eGo is, for a guy like me, the ultimate choice. No matter what I want to use for a cartomizer, atty, clearo, tank, whatever, and no matter how thin or thick the ejuice I want to vape, I can find the exact “sweet spot” within a minute or two with a variable voltage eGo battery. Clearomizers

The Joyetech eGo-C Twist (650mAh) features the 5-click on/off and lockout ‘twist’. Click the fire button 5 times to turn it off or on, and twist the end cap of the battery to lock or unlock the battery. As a safety measure when carrying the eGo battery in your pocket or purse, or a backpack, the twist-lock feature prevents the battery from accidentally turning on and draining down while you’re not using it. Since I carry mine in my jeans front pocket all the time this is a must-have feature for me.

Size

The eGo Twist (650mAh) is a bit longer than non-Variable Voltage eGo 650mAh batteries. The ones in this kit are right around 3.75 inches (97mm-98mm). This is the tradeoff when using a Variable Voltage battery but for myself it’s perfectly fine. Even with a CE5 attached it’s still a manageable size.

Battery Life

Naturally, Variable Voltage eGos are going to drain faster than non-VV, especially if you’re vaping in the upper voltage range. Still, modern advances in battery technology have made a real difference in battery life. I vape for a few hours with no worry about running out of juice (power or otherwise), and even if I do drain it dry I can always pick up my spare and with a few twists of the included CE5 I’m back up and vaping in less than 30 seconds.

Advanced Features of the Joyetech eGo-C Twist

Joyetech modified the circuit board of their non-VV eGo and included a smart Buck-Boost converter so that you can turn the knob to adjust the voltage output with ease and accuracy, thus, the variable voltage! Clearomizers

Voltage Accuracy

Accuracy is vital to finding the sweet spot for any particular eJuice so that it is releasing the maximum amount of vapor and flavor that the juice is capable of producing. In the 650mAh eGo Twist there are 8 grids on the knob, which represents 0.2v increments with each click. Twist the knob in a clockwise direction and you increase the voltage, and twist counter clockwise to lower the voltage.

The only thing that would be nice to see in an eGo-C Twist would be a pass-through charger option. To charge the eGo Twist you have to screw the battery into the charger rather than being able to insert a mini-USB plug into it. So, unless they do a complete redesign a pass-through option isn’t happening. Regardless, this is a very minor issue to me. The batteries charge quickly, and you get the spare battery with this starter kit, and together it means that even if you are a heavy Vaper you won’t run out of power when you need it.

(Note* Apollo eCigs has recently released their own eGo-V, a variable voltage eGo-style battery with pass-through capabilities. My review of this battery will be coming up soon.)

Clearomizers

The Clearomizer has taken the entire staff of Spinfuel by storm. It was quite by accident too. We had decided to try a CE2 some months back when our stock of 510 cartomizers was very low. We had a couple of packs of CE2 for 510’s just laying around so we filled a couple of them up and attached them to a mini-eCig battery, as well as an eGo-style battery that was 510-threaded, and the results were outstanding when compared to a normal single-coil standard resistance cartomizer.

The major advantage of any Clearomizer is the throat hit. No matter which Clearomizer you are using you’re going to experience a better throat hit than you would if you were vaping with its comparable cartomizer. This is because you using a full-fledged atomizer (anywhere from 1.8 to 3.0 ohms) and a wick, rather than a small, weaker atomizer and polyfill material wrapped around it. Sure, there are advances in cartomizers. I’m using, and will review shortly, a triple-coil cartomizer from Totally Wicked that give you a genuine throat hit like you wouldn’t believe, but triple coil cartos are quite a bit more money than standard cartos.

Anyway, after the first experience with CE2’s we went up the Clearomizer ladder and now you’ll find many more CE4+ clearos in action here at the office than cartomizers.

The CE5 Clearomizer

The Joyetech eGo-C Twist Starter Kit from MyFreedomSmokes comes with two (2) CE5 Clearomizers. These are the latest version of the ‘replaceable atomizers’ clearos, surpassing the CE4+ in performance, though only slightly.

What is truly fantastic about this starter kit is that MyFreedomSmokes has included ten (10) additional atomizer heads, all 2.4-ohm. The CE5’s that come with this starter kit contains a very adequate 2.0-ohm atty head, but because the CE5 is being included in a Variable Voltage eGo battery they have bumped up the ohms to 2.4 so that you can really push the voltage up and truly maximize the flavor and vapor of even the most difficult eLiquids. While other vendors would have you buy extra atty heads MyFreedomSmokes gives you10. That is outstanding customer consideration!

For the first few days with this eGo-C Twist and CE5 I was happy vaping with the included 2.0-ohm atty head (the one that came installed on the CE5). The vapor and throat hit were fantastic, and the flavor of the eJuice really shined through. I had loaded the CE5 with “Ginger’s eJuice – Old-Fashioned Sugar Cookie” and it was fantastic! I had a CE4 (not a CE4+) filled with the same eLiquid and when I compared them it was apparent that the CE5 was delivering a whole lot more flavor and vapor, and a more powerful throat hit. I was surprised by the difference.

When I decided to bump the atty head to 2.4-ohm I loaded the CE5 with Mountain Oak VaporsLegendary”, and turning the knob on the Twist I found the sweet spot to be 4.2v. Taking to 4.4v was just a tad too warm for me, and 4.0v was good, but not great. 4.2v was like turning on a light in a dark room. Boom! There it is! The same 4.2v doesn’t work on all flavors so I have decided to start all new vapes at 3.8v and work up and down the dial to find the best voltage, and then make a note on the bottle to remind me the next time I grab that juice.

Changing flavoring and refilling is a breeze. Granted, using the same flavor when you refill is an easier task, just unscrew the drip tip and drip the liquid in, screw the drip tip back on, that’s all there is to it. Changing flavors takes a couple more steps.

To change the flavor in a CE5 in addition to cleaning out the chamber (they are made with a plastic that is resistant to strong flavors getting into the plastic), you’ll need to clean the wick and the atty. The method I use is a simple 3-minute hot water rinsing and air dry. Since we’re not talking a carto full of polyfill material there is no need to boil them, at least I’ve found the need. And, at $2 a pop I plan on tossing the atty heads when I change flavors in the future, as well as buying a number of CE5’s ($4.95 each) so that I can have one for each of the flavors I vape. Clearomizers like the CE4+ and CE5 are economical enough, and provide a much better vape, than going through standard cartomizers or buying into expensive tanks systems, which use a cartomizer anyway.

Note* When I take part in an eJuice review I’ve used the CE4+ (because we have so many) and replace the atty head when I change the flavor. I intend on switching to the CE5 for the next review and just buy a couple of 10x packs of atty’s, $20.95 for 10)

The CE5 holds 1.6ML of eJuice. Certainly nowhere near the 3ML and 6ML tanks, but it’s so easy to refill that it doesn’t matter.

Here are the directions to filling and changing atty heads:

Filling a CE5:

  • Unscrew the Drip Tip from the Clearomizer
  • Fill the outer chamber with about 1.6ml of E-Liquid (Do not pour E-Liquid into the center tube, it is for airflow only)
  • Screw the Drip Tip back on
  • For best results wait a couple of minutes for the E-Liquid to feed to the coil before vaping
  • You do not need to use a syringe to fill, however, I use a 1ML plastic syringe with a short plastic needle.

To Change the atty Head:

  1. Unscrew the Drip Tip from the Clearomizer
  2. Pour out any remaining liquid
  3. Unscrew the tube from the base
  4. Unscrew the head from the base
  5. Screw a new head on and reassemble

That’s all there is to it!

The Package

In addition to the 2 eGo-C Twist’s and the 2 CE5’s, as well as the 10 extra atty heads mentioned above, you get the charger, USB wire charger, an empty 10ML bottle to carry around some extra eJuice, and the case. This rounds out the kit nicely.

I’ve recharged the eGo batteries using both the wall adapter and my computer’s USB port. I didn’t clock it, but it appeared that the wall adapter recharged the eGos a bit faster, but both ways worked well.

The case is a same case you see with many Joyetech eGo kits, but larger than most I’ve seen, plenty large enough for both eGo batteries, both CE5’s, the extra atty heads, and the wall and wire chargers. You “could” stuff the 10ML bottle with eJuice in there as well, but that would be pushing it in my opinion. Try that at your own risk 😉

Impressions and Buying Advice

First, I cannot emphasize this enough; the value of this starter kit is beyond a bargain. When you consider everything you get, a pair of CE5’s, a pair of eGo-C Twists, 10 extra atty heads, a large quality case, and the wall and wire chargers the $89.99 price makes this a deal you cannot pass up. If you’ve had an eGo Twist on your wish list, or your Christmas list, you won’t find a better deal anywhere.

Like I indicated in the beginning, these eGo-C Twists are the only hardware I’ve used since I got them 3 weeks ago. Since changing out one of the atty head’s (replacing one of the 2.0-ohms to a 2.4-ohm for testing) I’ve been running the same atty heads without a single issue. They vape as through the atty’s are new and at this point I cannot even guess as to when I will need to change them out, the general consensus seems to be about 3 weeks with moderate vaping and I have exceeded that already. Whether the lifespan of these attys is unusual or I’ve been vaping lighter than average I’m happy with the lifespan.

This Starter Kit contains the 2 pieces of hardware known to provide powerful vaping experiences. The Variable Voltage eGo by Joyetech and the newest version of a Clearomizer are perfectly matched. I can’t imagine a better vaping experience from any other eGo-style hardware.

MyFreedomSmokes didn’t reinvent the wheel with this hardware in this Starter Kit; there is nothing proprietary about it. Nonetheless, what they did was package a deal that is beyond excellent. When you consider what the Starter Kit offers and the excellent MyFreedomSmokes customer service, you just can’t go wrong.

About MyFreedomSmokes

This Starter Kit is not the first product from MyFreedomSmokes that we’ve reviewed. Our first was of “The Plunger”, a set of syringe, needles, and adapters for filling cartos, tanks, and even Clearomizers. The value ($24.95) for this kit was exceptional and it’s a big seller for them. The next was a review of their eLiquids. While MyFreedomSmokes may be known for their hardware they do makes excellent eLiquids. See our review of the selection of eLiquid flavors we were invited to sample.

So, that’s my review. I’m giving this Joyetech eGo-C Twist & CE5 Clearomizer Starter Kit a solid 5 out of 5 stars. I’m also giving MyFreedomSmokes a solid 5 out of 5 stars for their customer service and pricing of this great Starter Kit.

I invite you to leave your comments below, either on the kit I’ve reviewed or your experience with MyFreedomSmokes.
